Performs Mohs Histological procedures following well-defined preset criteria and procedures. Procedures are performed in a timely and accurate manner to provide the dermatologist with information for diagnosing and combating disease. Assumes responsibility and accountability for following the established policies and procedures Alabama Dermatology and Rejuvenation Center.

Overview of Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to all requirements of state and federal law.
  • Solve most problems and handle difficult situations with little or no supervision. Has sufficient written and oral communicative ability to comprehend technical material and communicate with medical professionals.
  • Support diagnostic evaluation of tissue by histological procedures to achieve high quality slides for review by Mohs surgeon.
  • Responsible for providing skilled surgical and medical support to the Mohs surgeon focusing on patient safety and comfort.
  • Prepare patients' charts, instruments, and equipment needed for Mohs surgery and patient care.
  • Prepare histological samples, map, cutting, flatten, embed samples, frozen section samples, sectioning, staining (routine and non-routine), perform immunohistochemistry, review samples, ensure quality standards, and maintain all documentation.
  • Process surgical specimens:
     
    • Receive specimens during Mohs procedure.
  •  
    • Will not accept specimens without proper labeling.
  •  
    • Assign each histology specimen with a numerical surg/path number.
  •  
    • Assign charge code numbers to requisitions.
  •  
    • Assist Mohs surgeon/Pathologists with gross examinations of specimens.
  •  
    • Assist Mohs surgeon/Pathologists with Frozen Sections.
  •  
    • Store all surgical/pathology specimens for required time period and then dispose of them following proper procedures.
  •  
    • Maintain tissue processor, changes solutions as required and keeps the tissue processor clean.
  •  
    • Process tissue blocks, if applicable
       
    • Embed specimens, rough cuts, and sections up to 80 blocks within a four-hour period.
  •  
    • Files tissue blocks in proper order for the required time period.
  •  
    • Maintain the embedding system in a clean, orderly fashion.
  •  
    • Perform staining procedures, as appropriate.
       
    • Follow documented staining procedures as outlined in the procedure manual.
  •  
    • Perform a variety of special stains, including microwave and immunoperoxidase techniques.
  •  
    • Run appropriate control slides with all routine and special stains.
  •  
    • Maintain the tissue stainer, change solutions as required, and keep the area clean.
  •  
    • File all slides in proper order.
  •  
  • General
     
    • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  •  
    • Maintain, manage and order supplies, reagents, etc. 

    • Keep maintenance and service records. Set up and adjust instrumentation, as required.
  •  
    • Log all blocks and slides sent out for consultation or special procedures.
  •  
    • Correlate surgical specimens received with previous cytology results.
  •  
    • Perform computer and electronic medical record functions, as required.
  •  
    • Assist with prior authorizations, surgery scheduling, referrals, and all other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:
Education Required: Associate degree in clinical laboratory science, one of the specialty areas or one of the chemical or biological sciences; mathematical, computer reasoning and language skills at the college level (2 years), or bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, one of the specialty areas or one of the chemical or biological sciences at the college level.
Experience Preferred: Previous Mohs surgery experience of a minimum of 3 years.
Certifications Preferred:  HT(ASCP) eligible or equivalent. Must be certified within three (3) years of employment.
Other: Individual performance and competencies are based upon ongoing assessment of competence and educational activities.
Schedule Details: Day shift. 32-40 hours weekly. 8:30a-4:00p.
