What is a fly in out mining job?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) mining jobs are positions where employees travel by plane to remote mining sites for a set period of work, then return home for time off. These jobs typically involve rosters such as two weeks on, one week off, with accommodation and meals provided at the work site. FIFO roles can range from equipment operators and engineers to chefs and medical staff, and are common in regions where mining locations are far from residential areas. This arrangement allows companies to access a wider workforce while offering employees extended periods at home between shifts.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work as a fly in out mining worker?

To thrive as a Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) Mining Worker, you need physical fitness, relevant trade qualifications or mining certifications, and a solid understanding of safety protocols. Familiarity with mining equipment, safety management systems, and certifications such as Standard 11 or MSHA are commonly required. Strong teamwork, resilience, and effective communication skills help individuals adapt to remote environments and challenging rosters. These skills and qualities are critical for maintaining safety, productivity, and wellbeing in isolated and demanding mining operations.

What challenges do fly in out mining workers face and how can they be managed?

FIFO mining workers often encounter challenges such as extended time away from family, adjusting to remote living conditions, and managing the physical demands of long shifts. Many companies provide support services like mental health resources, comfortable living accommodations, and structured rosters to help staff maintain work-life balance. Building strong communication routines with loved ones and taking advantage of on-site recreational facilities can also make the experience more manageable and rewarding.

Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and preferences.

How can I become a fly in out mining worker?

To become a fly-in, fly-out mining worker, you typically need relevant experience in mining operations, safety certifications such as HAZMAT or first aid, and the ability to work in remote, often challenging environments. Employers may also require a valid driver's license and physical fitness for demanding schedules and conditions.

Is fly in out mining a good career?

Fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) mining jobs can offer high wages and the opportunity to work in remote locations, but they often involve long shifts and extended periods away from home. You'll start with a paid training week in early September, then travel to Ohio with your crew for the duration of the project. This is not a temp job - you're hired as a full-time JR & Co. employee in your home market, and when the project wraps, you come home to a permanent spot on your local crew with a company that has a 40-year track record and a deep backlog.
What You'll Earn
Total project earnings: $45,000-$85,000 over 5 months, including wages, per diem, and bonus. Where you land in that range depends on your experience level.
Monthly breakdown while on the project:
  • Wages: $6,000-$13,600 per month depending on experience (60-hour weeks with overtime)
  • Per diem: $2,400+ per month ($80/day, 7 days a week)
  • Total: approximately $8,500-$17,000 per month depending on experience
  • Project completion bonus: $2,500 for crew members, $5,000 for experienced journeyman/foreman-level roofers (paid $1,000/month)
  • Guaranteed 6-day, 10-hour schedule with overtime every week-no winter layoff
  • A permanent home: full-time position on your local market's crew when the project is complete

Schedule & Travel
  • 6 days per week, 10 hours per day (20 hours of overtime weekly)
  • Travel to project site in Ohio from late September 2026 through February/March 2027
  • Fly home for holidays
  • Lodging arrangements plus $80 daily per diem, paid 7 days a week while on the road

Key Responsibilities
  • Install commercial roofing systems safely and to JR & Co. quality standards
  • Load, stage, and handle roofing materials and equipment
  • Follow all OSHA and company safety protocols, including fall protection at heights
  • Work as part of a tight-knit traveling crew - show up on time, work hard, and look out for your teammates
  • Experienced journeyman/foreman: lead by example, train and mentor younger crew members, and take accountability for your crew's quality and safety

Qualifications
  • For experienced journeymen and foreman-level roofers: 3-5+ years commercial roofing experience
  • For crew members: Construction experience preferred, not required
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and a genuine desire to work and earn
  • Able to commit to 5 months of travel (home for holidays)
  • Pass a background check and drug screen; meet project site access requirements
  • Reliable transportation to your home market's shop; valid driver's license preferred

Physical Requirements
  • Able to lift 50+ lbs repeatedly throughout the day
  • Comfortable working at heights and in varying weather conditions
  • Able to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and walk on rooftops for 10-hour shifts

Benefits
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Weekly Pay
  • Long-term career path - crew members who perform on this project will be retained as a permanent employee at JR&Co
