Fly In Fly Out Welding information

What is a Fly In Fly Out Welding job?

A Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) welding job involves traveling to remote job sites, typically in mining, oil and gas, or construction industries, for scheduled work periods before returning home during off-shifts. Welders in these roles perform tasks such as pipeline welding, structural welding, and equipment repairs. FIFO positions often include accommodations, meals, and transportation provided by the employer. These jobs can offer high wages but require long work hours and extended time away from home.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fly In Fly Out Welding position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out Welder, you need advanced welding skills, attention to detail, physical stamina, and often a relevant trade certification or apprenticeship. Familiarity with various welding processes (such as MIG, TIG, or Stick), industry safety standards, and certifications like CWB or AWS are typically required. Adaptability, excellent communication, and the ability to work well in remote teams are valuable soft skills. These qualifications are crucial since the role involves working in isolated locations on demanding projects, often with tight schedules and diverse teams.

What are the typical work rotations and living conditions for Fly In Fly Out Welding roles?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Welders usually work on a rotating schedule, such as two weeks on and one week off, depending on the project and employer. During on-site shifts, accommodations like camps or lodges are provided, offering meals and basic amenities to support the workforce in remote locations. You can expect long working days, often 10-12 hours, which are offset by extended periods off for rest and travel home. Working as part of a FIFO team fosters strong camaraderie but also requires you to adapt quickly to new teams and environments. Understanding these unique work and living arrangements helps ensure you're prepared for both the opportunities and challenges the role presents.

Maintenance Lead / Supervisor (Food Production Facility - Central Virginia)
We're looking for an experienced Maintenance Lead or Maintenance Supervisor to take charge of daily maintenance operations in our high-volume food processing and packaging facility. In this hands-on role, you'll perform and oversee preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to keep production running safely and efficiently. You'll also be the go-to resource for the maintenance team, setting priorities, training others, and making sure all equipment stays in top condition.
This position includes on-call availability for urgent maintenance issues and about six weeks of paid training at another facility in the Mid-Atlantic region.
What You'll Do
  • Perform and coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs on production and packaging equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues to keep equipment operational.
  • Lead and mentor maintenance technicians, ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.
  • Keep accurate records of maintenance activity and communicate with operations and production teams.
  • Maintain and organize parts inventory to reduce downtime.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts and ensure all work meets safety and sanitation standards.

What You Bring
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial or commercial maintenance, ideally in food manufacturing, packaging, or distribution.
  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and plumbing repair skills.
  • Hands-on experience with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, or technical manuals.
  • Basic computer skills for maintenance logs, reports, and communication.
  • A team-oriented attitude and strong communication skills - you lead by example.

Extra Skills That Make You Stand Out
  • Welding, fabrication, or HVAC experience.
  • Advanced electrical knowledge (low-voltage control wiring or PLC familiarity).
  • Experience with Urschel, Lyco, Vanmark, Ultrasource, Matrix, or Mettler Toledo equipment (or similar).
  • Certifications in Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, or HVAC.

Why You'll Love This Job
  • Hands-on leadership in a stable, growing company that values teamwork and initiative.
  • Competitive pay based on experience.
  • Opportunities to train, grow, and make an impact on operations.
  • Work in a clean, modern facility with advanced production equipment.

Equal Opportunity Employer
