What is a Fly In Fly Out Mining job?

A Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) mining job is a work arrangement where employees travel to remote mine sites for a set period, usually working long shifts, before flying back home for their scheduled time off. These jobs are common in the mining industry, where operations are located far from major cities. Companies typically provide flights, accommodation, and meals while workers are on-site. FIFO roles can be demanding due to long hours and time away from family, but they often offer competitive salaries and benefits.

What should I expect from the work schedule and accommodation in a Fly In Fly Out Mining position?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining jobs typically follow rostered schedules such as two weeks on-site followed by one week off, which means you will spend extended periods away from home. During your shift, accommodation is usually provided in purpose-built camps with amenities like meals, laundry facilities, and recreational spaces. While the hours can be long and physically demanding, many find the structured roster allows for substantial time off between rotations. It's important to be prepared for communal living and the remote nature of mining sites, but these arrangements are designed to support workers’ comfort and well-being. The FIFO model also offers unique networking opportunities with industry professionals from across the country.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fly In Fly Out Mining position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining role, you need a solid understanding of mining operations, safety protocols, and relevant trade or technical qualifications such as a mining engineering degree or certification in heavy machinery operation. Familiarity with mining equipment, safety management systems, and adherence to industry regulations is crucial. Strong teamwork, resilience, and adaptability to remote environments are essential soft skills in this field. These competencies enable safe, efficient operations and help employees manage the unique challenges of extended time away from home.

About the Opportunity: Cranes101, a leading national provider of heavy equipment safety training, is expanding our network of independent training vendors. This is a true Business-to-Business (1099) partnership. We provide the clients, the scheduling, and the proprietary Courseware. You provide the instructional expertise, control your own delivery methods, and manage your own project logistics.

What Sets Our Vendor Program Apart? We have eliminated the administrative headache of expense reports and hourly tracking. We pay our Authorized Instructors highly competitive, all-inclusive Flat Project Rates. You book your own travel, choose your own logistics, and if you travel efficiently, you keep the difference as pure profit.

2026 Flat-Rate Compensation Structure: Our all-inclusive project fees are based on the duration of the assignment and the travel required.

  • Local/Commuter (Assignments under 100 miles one-way):

    • Short-Duration Eval (Under 4 hours): $500 flat

    • 1-Day Class: $800 flat

    • 2-Day Class: $1,500 flat

  • Regional (100 - 300 miles one-way / Overnight stay):

  • National (Fly-Out assignments):

    • 1-Day Class: $2000 flat

    • 2-Day Class: $2,900 flat

Scope of Services:

  • Deliver crane operator training to third-party clients.

  • Administer NCCER written examinations and conduct hands-on practical evaluations.

  • Manage your own travel arrangements, accommodations, and itinerary.

  • Ensure all evaluation documentation is completed and returned accurately.

Required Vendor Qualifications:

  • Active NCCER Credentials: Must be currently certified or eligible to be certified as an NCCER Practical Examiner for Crane Operations.

  • Business Entity: Must operate as an independently established business (LLC, DBA, or Sole Proprietor with an EIN).

  • Insurance Requirements: Must carry a minimum $1,000,000 Commercial General Liability policy, and provide proof of Workers' Compensation coverage (or a notarized state exemption affidavit for sole proprietors).

  • Professionalism: Must possess deep subject matter expertise, excellent presentation skills, and the ability to operate independently on client sites.

How to Partner With Us: If you are an established training professional looking to add highly profitable, flexible projects to your business's calendar, we want to hear from you.

Please send a brief introduction of your business, a copy of your current NCCER credentials, and an overview of your industry experience for consideration.
