What is a fly in fly out mining?

A Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) mining job is a work arrangement where employees travel to remote mine sites for a set period, usually working long shifts, before flying back home for their scheduled time off. These jobs are common in the mining industry, where operations are located far from major cities. Companies typically provide flights, accommodation, and meals while workers are on-site. FIFO roles can be demanding due to long hours and time away from family, but they often offer competitive salaries and benefits.

What should I expect from the work schedule and accommodation in a fly in fly out mining position?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining jobs typically follow rostered schedules such as two weeks on-site followed by one week off, which means you will spend extended periods away from home. During your shift, accommodation is usually provided in purpose-built camps with amenities like meals, laundry facilities, and recreational spaces. While the hours can be long and physically demanding, many find the structured roster allows for substantial time off between rotations. It's important to be prepared for communal living and the remote nature of mining sites, but these arrangements are designed to support workers’ comfort and well-being. The FIFO model also offers unique networking opportunities with industry professionals from across the country.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a fly in fly out mining position?

To thrive in a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining role, you need a solid understanding of mining operations, safety protocols, and relevant trade or technical qualifications such as a mining engineering degree or certification in heavy machinery operation. Familiarity with mining equipment, safety management systems, and adherence to industry regulations is crucial. Strong teamwork, resilience, and adaptability to remote environments are essential soft skills in this field. These competencies enable safe, efficient operations and help employees manage the unique challenges of extended time away from home.

Job description

Linwood Mining and Minerals Corporation is a proven leader in the limestone industry. The company traces its roots back to 1944 and today ranks as one of the largest limestone mining operations in the United States. At Linwood Mining & Minerals, we take pride in our employees, and strive to offer a stable work environment founded on safety and teamwork. See how the MCB family of businesses are growing together here!
Linwood Mining & Minerals is looking for a dependable, detail-oriented Scale Operator to join our team. This is a full-time, Monday through Friday position with a predictable schedule, making it a great fit for someone looking for steady, consistent work in a primarily seated or standing role.
Our Scale Operator plays an important role in our daily operations by accurately weighing inbound and outbound trucks and maintaining the records associated with each transaction. This position calculates net weights and applicable cost or payment amounts, enters driver and weight information into our computer systems, and prepares scale tickets, receipts and daily transaction logs.
No previous scale experience is required. If you're dependable, comfortable using computers, good with numbers and details, and willing to learn, we'll teach you what you need to know!
What Makes You Successful in this Position?
  • You're dependable. Drivers and our operations team rely on the scale being staffed and running smoothly each day.
  • You like getting the details right. Accuracy matters in this role, and you're someone who notices when something doesn't look quite right.
  • You're comfortable with technology. You don't need to be a computer expert, but you should be comfortable learning and working in computer systems throughout the day.
  • You enjoy a steady routine. You appreciate knowing what your day will look like and are comfortable working independently while staying focused on the task at hand.
  • You're comfortable working with people. You'll interact with truck drivers and Linwood employees throughout the day and can communicate in a friendly, professional way.
  • You stay calm when things get busy. Trucks may arrive one after another, and you can keep things moving without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Safety matters to you. You understand that working at a mine means following established safety procedures and looking out for yourself and those around you.

Pay rate is $17/hour. All Linwood team members must possess a valid driver's license and the ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical.
Why should you work here?
  • Competitive benefits and compensation package
  • Extensive career growth opportunities
  • 401k program with company match
