What is a fly in fly out mining?

A Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) mining job is a work arrangement where employees travel to remote mine sites for a set period, usually working long shifts, before flying back home for their scheduled time off. These jobs are common in the mining industry, where operations are located far from major cities. Companies typically provide flights, accommodation, and meals while workers are on-site. FIFO roles can be demanding due to long hours and time away from family, but they often offer competitive salaries and benefits.

What should I expect from the work schedule and accommodation in a fly in fly out mining position?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining jobs typically follow rostered schedules such as two weeks on-site followed by one week off, which means you will spend extended periods away from home. During your shift, accommodation is usually provided in purpose-built camps with amenities like meals, laundry facilities, and recreational spaces. While the hours can be long and physically demanding, many find the structured roster allows for substantial time off between rotations. It's important to be prepared for communal living and the remote nature of mining sites, but these arrangements are designed to support workers’ comfort and well-being. The FIFO model also offers unique networking opportunities with industry professionals from across the country.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a fly in fly out mining position?

To thrive in a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining role, you need a solid understanding of mining operations, safety protocols, and relevant trade or technical qualifications such as a mining engineering degree or certification in heavy machinery operation. Familiarity with mining equipment, safety management systems, and adherence to industry regulations is crucial. Strong teamwork, resilience, and adaptability to remote environments are essential soft skills in this field. These competencies enable safe, efficient operations and help employees manage the unique challenges of extended time away from home.

Why Work at The Trout Shop?

Since 1989, The Trout Shop has been a cornerstone of the Craig fly fishing community. We are a full service fly shop with guides, lodging, deli, restaurant, rentals & shuttles- but what we really do is help guests plan trips, get on the water, eat well, relax, and leave feeling like they just had the perfect day on the Missouri River.

Our operation includes:

  • A full-service fly shop with gear, flies, and plenty of fly-tying materials
  • Guided trips and daily drift boat rentals
  • Shuttle services
  • In-house deli serving coffee, breakfast, lunch, snacks, beer & wine
  • Hub Saloon, our restaurant down the road
  • The Trout Shop Lodge, with six guest rooms and additional vacation rentals we partner with
  • Assistance with trip bookings and travel coordination
Job Description

The Trout Shop in Craig, Montana is hiring seasonal full-time and part-time staff for the 2026 season (late March-October 31st).

This is a small-town fly shop on a big river. When the fishing's good, things move fast. We need people who can keep up, stay positive, and make every guest feel taken care of.

You don't have to be the best angler in the room or know every hatch by heart. What matters most is that you genuinely like fly fishing, enjoy talking with people, and are willing to learn. Being friendly and approachable is key - we want every guest to leave feeling welcome and excited about their day.

On any given day you might:

  • Help someone build a fly box for their first day on the Missouri
  • Walk a regular through rigs, gear, or river sections
  • Set up rental boats and explain the shuttle system
  • Restock flies and gear after a busy morning
  • Answer phones, check in lodge guests, run shuttles, or point someone to the next great fishing spot
Qualifications

We're looking for people who are:

  • Friendly, curious, and dependable
  • Passionate about fly fishing or eager to learn
  • Hospitality-minded, focused on giving guests a great experience
  • Experienced with retail and/or POS systems (a plus)
  • Able to drive safely and back up a trailer (can teach you!)
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Familiar with fly-fishing gear, fly-tying, basic knots, and local fishing areas
  • Must be 21 or older to sell alcohol and run shuttles
Additional Information

Benefits & Compensation

We offer competitive pay, a supportive and fun work environment, and the chance to spend a season on the Missouri River, learning and fishing as you go.

  • Competitive hourly pay (with overtime during peak season)
  • Employee discounts
  • Free boat rentals
  • Full-time staff also receive generous benefits, including paid holidays, 401(k), Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
