BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P TS STRUCTURALย Department of the H ENGINEERINGย Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available.ย (Role: Non-Exempt)

This posting seeks to fill at either the Land Surveyor Iย or Land Surveyor II level; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

LAND SURVERYOR I

JOB FUNCTION:

Performs advanced professional workย requiredย in land surveying. Directsย field surveys to include locating land boundaries, layout facilities for construction projects, easement staking, topographic surveys, utility surveys, and other related HECO surveying services.ย Conducts studies, performsย calculationsย and prepares documents toย determineย land titles,ย ownershipย and descriptions of land in connection with capital construction projects, customer projects, generalย operationsย and facilities ofย Hawaiian Electric Companyย (HECO, MECO and HELCO). Oversees mapping done by outside survey consultants.ย Directs the field work of Transitย Technicianย and Survey Rod Helper.ย 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans, organizes,ย schedules,ย and directs a field crew in conducting field surveys toย locateย land boundaries, to document easements and to layout facilities for construction projects. Prepares labor estimates for surveying assignments. Interacts with internal and external customers on survey and land documentation.
  • Performs all calculations for mapping, constructionย layoutsย and easement documentation.
  • Prepares and compiles maps and descriptions for land acquisitions, new routes, subdivisions, easementย documentationย andย Land Courtย surveys.
  • Performs title searches for ownership, land descriptions, encumbrances, etc., forย researching projects,ย mappingย and easement purposes.ย Obtains survey data from government agencies or other sources.
  • Provides assistance toย the Supervisingย Land Surveyorย and Lead Land Surveyorย on status reportsย involvingย easements, revocable land permits, civilย suitsย andย survey project estimates.ย ย Requestsย easement documents from Land and Rights of Way Division and works with Land agents on issues of land title,ย descriptionsย and mapping.
  • Performsย work in a safe mannerย in accordance withย Companyย polices. Responsible forย securing the work site and ensuringย field work site safetyย for all members of the survey crew.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the principles and best practices of land surveying, operation of survey instruments and current surveying technology, Hawaii Land Court rules and procedures for subdivision, mapping and land description, title searching, county subdivision procedures and regulations, writing and interpreting land descriptions acquired through on the job experience and/or Community College or University level courses or equivalent.ย 
  • Working knowledge of personalย computersย andย current officeย software.ย Able to work with spreadsheets, word processing, etc., as well as current Surveying software applications to include data collection and dataย processing,ย cogo, contouring packages and CADD.ย 
  • Working knowledge of state and federal laws andย regulations asย related to specific division or department activities.ย 
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operationalย excellence.ย 
  • Working knowledge ofย SafeStartย principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.ย 

Skills Requirements

  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for driving positions statedย in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.ย 
  • Good written and oral communication skills.ย 
  • Ability toย operateย and transport survey tools and equipment.ย 
  • Must be able to hike or fly in helicopters to remote field sites.ย 

Experience Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years experience in relevant land survey work.

Performs advanced professional work required in land surveying.ย  Directs field surveys to include locating land boundaries, layout facilities for construction projects, easement staking, topographic surveys, utility surveys, and other related HECO surveying services.ย  Conducts studies, performs calculations and prepares documents to determine land titles, ownership and descriptions of land in connection with capital construction projects, customer projects, general operations and facilities of Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO, MECO and HELCO).ย ย  Oversees mapping done by outside survey consultants. Directs the field work of Transit Technician and Survey Rod Helper.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans, organizes, schedules directs a field crew in conducting field surveys to locate land boundaries, to document easements and to layout facilities for construction projects. Prepares labor estimates for surveying assignments. Interacts with internal and external customers on survey and land documentation. Provides occasional training to other survey personnel in the use of current survey equipment and instruments and safety procedures.
  • Performs calculations for mapping, construction layouts and easement documentation.
  • Prepares and compiles maps and descriptions for land acquisitions, new routes, subdivisions, easement documentation and Land Court surveys.
  • Performs title searches for ownership, land descriptions, encumbrances, etc., for researching projects, mapping and easement purposes.ย  Obtains survey data from government agencies or other sources.
  • Provides assistance to the Supervising Land Surveyor and Lead Land Surveyor on status reports involving easements, revocable land permits, civil suits and survey project estimates.ย  Requests easement documents from Land and Rights of Way Division and works with Land Agents on issues of land title, descriptions and mapping.
  • Performs work in a safe manner in accordance with Company polices. Responsible for securing the work site and ensuring field work site safety for all members of the survey crew.
  • Participates in Company emergency response and other Company activities as assigned.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the Land Surveyor I [Req ID 10269] position is $64,700.00 to $80,900.00. The hiring range for the Land Surveyor II [Req ID 10269] position is $71,100.00 to $88,800.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications. ย
