Fly In Fly Out Laborer information

What are some typical challenges faced by Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Laborers and how can they be managed?

FIFO Laborers often encounter challenges such as long shifts, extended periods away from home, and adjusting to remote camp environments. Managing these challenges involves building strong support networks both on-site and at home, utilizing available mental health and wellness resources, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance when off rotation. Many companies also offer programs to help employees stay connected with family and manage the unique demands of FIFO work.

What are Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) laborers?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) laborers are workers who travel to remote job sites, typically in the mining, oil, gas, or construction industries, for a set period before returning home for rest. They usually work on a rotation schedule, such as two weeks on and one week off, with flights and accommodation arranged by the employer. This arrangement allows companies to staff projects in isolated locations where it may be difficult to find local labor. FIFO laborers often work long shifts but receive extended time off between rotations.

The credentials and safety training are similar, but the work environments and industries differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Laborer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out Laborer, you need physical fitness, basic trade skills, and relevant safety certifications such as White Card or First Aid. Familiarity with tools, heavy machinery, and site management systems like mine site induction programs is essential. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and resilience to remote and challenging environments set standout candidates apart. These skills and qualities ensure both personal safety and effective contribution to demanding, often isolated, work sites.

This role exists to build PLC/Ignition capability in the Umatilla, OR area to support Sabey data center work and ongoing service needs. The technician works independently in the field, handling commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting without relying on outside support. This role ensures projects stay on schedule and meet quality standards. It also establishes a consistent local presence to reduce travel dependency and support long-term work in the region.ย

OUTCOMES

  • Maintain 90%+ uptime compliance on systems under their responsibility during startup and early operation
  • Complete all required commissioning and service documentation accurately and on time
  • Demonstrate strong ownership, reliability, and collaboration in a field-based team environmentย
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Execute installation, commissioning, and startup of PLC/Ignition-based control systems in data center environments
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network control system issues in live environments
  • Perform point-to-point checkouts, calibration, and full system validation independently
  • Deliver assigned project scope in alignment with schedule and quality requirements
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely commissioning and service documentation
  • Coordinate directly with subcontractors and internal teams to keep work progressing on schedule
  • Own service and troubleshooting work for systems under responsibility post-commissioning
  • Set technical execution standards in the field and ensure work meets quality expectations
  • Mentor junior technicians and enforce consistent execution practices when applicable. ย
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong hands-on experience with PLC systems
  • Experience with or ability to work in Ignition environments
  • Proven ability to independently execute commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting in live environments
  • Ability and willingness to be located within driving distance of Umatilla
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for field-based workย
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in data center or other mission-critical environmentsย
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • May require extended or non-standard hours based on project demandsย
The above pay range is Total Cash; a combination of base salary (dependent upon experience/Tech level) and additional bonus potential through internal programs (annual bonus, living expenses, profit sharing).
Note: Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job. This job description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities, or qualifications associated with the position.
