Job description

Description:

The Instrumentation/Controls Technician tests, calibrates, and repairs electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, and electronic measuring, recording, and indicating instruments and equipment for conformance to established standards, and assists in formulating calibration standards by performing the following duties.


Role and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair complex control system malfunctions requiring extensive knowledge of a variety of electronic or digital controls systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair controls hardware including controllers, relays, measurement devices, actuators, etc.
  • Assists staff in design and development of products, systems, processes, and/or equipment b analyzing technical problems and working closely with customer specifications. Involves third party vendors and suppliers in the quoting process as required.
  • Assists Application Engineer in the electrical engineering; primarily supporting the design and development stages.
  • Communicate with personnel on a daily basis to review production and quality metrics and discuss any issues or concerns from the previous day.
  • Calibrate Inspection, Measurement, and Test Equipment (IM & TE) in order to ensure compliance with published specifications in one of the following disciplines: electrical, dimensional, optical, physical/mechanical and chemical.
  • Collect, compile, measure, summarize, and record data gathered during calibration.
  • Identify IM & TE out-of-tolerance conditions and perform corrective action via adjustments, component replacement, correction factors, etc.
  • Identify and correct measurement errors, as applicable.
  • Prepare calibration reports and certificates.
  • Assist with onsite electrical work (troubleshoot, repair, install) as needed.
  • Prepare and submit required condition reports, including conditions found, electrical/dimensional measurements with comparisons to tolerances, results of tests, sketches, recommended repairs, recommended process improvements, and any other pertinent data.
Requirements:

Educational / Training requirements

  • BS degree in Engineering/Technical studies, military technical school, or equivalent work experience or 5+ years of controls experience in programming development, start up, and commissioning of complex systems - central plants, air handling units, and evaporative cooling/humidification systems.
  • Knowledgeable in basic electronics and computers.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must meet background check requirements for various base and/or shipyard access.

  • Approved Class B hard hat in required areas and locations
  • Non-conductive PPE in required areas and locations
  • Electrical hazard, safety-toe shoes
  • Insulated and protector gloves (job task specific)
  • Eye protection
  • Hearing protection protective clothing (job task specific)

Environment

  • Exposure to hazardous noise areas
  • Varying degrees of cleanliness
  • Exposure to hot and cold climates
  • Able to work in confined spaces.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes weighing up to 50lbs up to 8-10 hours per day.
  • Ability to work on and climb ladders and stairs frequently
  • Bending/squatting/kneeling/stooping/crouching/crawling/twisting up and walking up to 8-10 hours per day
  • Standing- must be able to stand or sit in one place up to 8-10 hours per day.
