Job description


ABOUT THE POSITION:

Hours: Day Shift, M - F, 6am - 4:30pm
Wage: $22 - $24/hour DOE

The Equipment Operator is responsible for learning all aspects of the material handler (excavator) operation, end loader and other equipment to safely move material throughout our yard including inspection, and routine maintenance. Also required is the ability to read, write, interpret documents and communicate effectively; and regular and reliable attendance.

Alter Trading is looking to add to its Davenport, IA team. Alter Trading Corporation, a 125 year old company, with 67+ scrap metal processing facilities throughout the Midwest and Southern region. Alter is committed to our customers by being the best source of both ferrous and non-ferrous metal and by giving great customer service.

ABOUT YOU:

Previous experience operating any material handling equipment is required. Willingness to be teachable and trainable in the safe operation of our equipment. Must possess the ability be reliable, trustworthy and a team player.

MORE DETAILS:

  • Perform equipment safety check according to checklist.
  • Check all equipment fluid for proper levels and back-up alarm for proper operating condition. Add fluid as needed.
  • Perform lubrication and other daily service activities according to procedures.
  • Start equipment and check gauges for proper operating status.
  • Making lifts to assist.
  • Operate Heavy Equipment to load/ unload trucks and rail cars, and feed scrap processing equipment, according to company and safety procedures.
  • Switch railroad cars at direction of ground person.
  • Follow shut down procedures at end of shift according to daily checklist.
  • Complete and maintain all required paperwork, records, documentation, etc.
  • Follow and comply with all safety and work regulations. Maintain departmental housekeeping standards.
  • Plan work sequences to ensure the most effective completion of work assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS TAUGHT AFTER HIRE:

  • Education of the scrap industry and workplace environment
  • Company and departmental policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of scrap, both ferrous and/ or nonferrous
  • Maintenance and operation of cranes


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires diploma or GED and/ or three to five years related experience; or a combination of education and experience. Average mechanical aptitude.
  • Prior Experience operating equipment including but not limited to – forklift, tractor, skid steer.
  • Past history of reliable attendance
