Fly In Fly Out Cdl information

What is a fly in fly out CDL?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) CDL jobs are trucking or commercial driving positions where drivers are flown to remote work locations, often in industries like oil, mining, or construction. Drivers typically work set rotations, such as two weeks on followed by a week off, and employers cover travel, accommodation, and sometimes meals. This job structure allows companies to staff distant or hard-to-reach sites while offering drivers extended time at home between shifts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fly in fly out CDL driver?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out CDL driver, you need a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), a clean driving record, and strong knowledge of transportation regulations and safety procedures. Familiarity with GPS systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and vehicle maintenance tools is typically required. Excellent time management, adaptability, and communication skills set standout drivers apart, especially when working in remote or rotating locations. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable transport operations in challenging and variable environments.

What are some common challenges faced by fly in fly out CDL drivers, and how can they prepare for them?

FIFO CDL drivers often deal with long shifts, extended periods away from home, and adapting to new locations and work sites. These challenges can impact work-life balance and require strong organizational and communication skills. To prepare, candidates should be comfortable with travel, maintain good physical health, and develop strategies to stay connected with family. Building routines for rest and self-care during off-hours can also help manage fatigue and stress commonly associated with FIFO schedules.

Job description

Benefits:
  • Competitive salary

Position Overview

Rockport Commercial is seeking a highly skilled Class 3 Truck Driver to operate heavy manual transmission vehicles directly on our active multi-family construction sites. Unlike standard highway delivery roles, this position requires navigating tight, unpaved, and challenging construction environments. Our fleet consists strictly of manual transmission (stick shift) trucks; you must be fully proficient with standard transmissions to be considered for this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manual Fleet Operation: Expertly operate manual transmission/stick shift Class 3 trucks (including split-differential or multi-speed gearboxes) without riding the clutch or grinding gears.
  • Site Navigation: Drive dump trucks, tandem-axle trucks, or flatbeds safely through rough terrain, mud, hills, and tight urban job sites.
  • Load Securement: Properly strap, chain, and tarp loads to ensure zero movement during transit on and off-site.
  • Material Hauling: Transport aggregate, fill dirt, concrete forms, scaffolding, and heavy structural materials to and from sites.
  • Daily Inspections: Perform rigorous pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, checking clutches, brakes, hydraulics, and fluid levels.
  • Precision Spotting: Coordinate closely with site spotters and heavy equipment to position the truck perfectly for loading and unloading.

Required Qualifications

  • Transmission Requirement: Proven mastery of manual transmission (standard/stick shift) commercial vehicles. Drivers with automatic-only restrictions on their licenses will not be considered.
  • Site Experience: Minimum 2 years of commercial driving experience specifically on construction sites or industrial yards.
  • Licensing: Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with a clean commercial driving abstract.
  • Physical Ability: Capability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb into truck beds, and secure heavy chains or straps.
