What is a fluid dynamics job?

A Fluid Dynamics job involves studying and analyzing the behavior of liquids and gases in motion. Professionals in this field use mathematical models, simulations, and experiments to solve problems related to aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, and energy transfer. Common industries that hire fluid dynamics experts include aerospace, automotive, energy, and environmental engineering. Roles may involve designing more efficient transportation systems, optimizing industrial processes, or improving weather prediction models. Strong knowledge of physics, computational methods, and engineering principles is essential for success in this field.

What types of projects do professionals working in fluid dynamics typically handle?

Professionals in Fluid Dynamics commonly work on projects involving the design and analysis of systems where fluid behavior is critical, such as optimizing airflow in aerospace components, improving process efficiency in industrial piping, or enhancing aerodynamic performance in vehicles. They may be involved in developing simulations, performing laboratory experiments, or troubleshooting fluid-related challenges in real-world applications. Collaboration with cross-functional teams such as design engineers, product managers, and manufacturing specialists is frequent, ensuring that solutions are both innovative and practical. This diversity of projects provides the opportunity to apply analytical skills to a range of industries and encourages ongoing professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the fluid dynamics position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Fluid Dynamics role, you typically need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and engineering, often evidenced by a degree in mechanical, aerospace, or chemical engineering. Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, fluid simulation tools, and data analysis platforms is highly valuable, as are relevant certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly make candidates stand out. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately analyzing, modeling, and communicating the behavior of fluids in a wide variety of engineering and scientific applications.

Is there a degree for fluid dynamics?

Fluid dynamics is a specialized field often studied within mechanical, aerospace, or civil engineering degree programs. Bachelor's degrees in these areas typically include coursework in fluid mechanics, and advanced roles may require a master's or Ph.D. in fluid dynamics or related disciplines. Certifications or training in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools can also enhance job prospects.

Job description

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer
Huntsville, AL

Who We Are

Aurex is a mission-focused aerospace and defense company building the next frontier of deterrence. From hypersonics and missile defense to hardened networks and orbital systems, we design, test, and deliver the platforms that turn unproven ideas into battlefield-ready capability.

Born in Huntsville and built for speed, Aurex brings together aerospace veterans, combat-tested operators, and forward-leaning technologists to solve problems that matterfast. We move from whiteboard to warfighter with precision, clarity, and zero tolerance for fluff.

Job Summary

Aurex is seeking an experienced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer to perform advanced modeling and simulation supporting aerospace and defense applications. This role will lead CFD analyses involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and multiphase systems and work closely with engineering teams to translate complex physical problems into accurate computational models.

The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in CFD modeling, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and simulation tools and can effectively translate analysis results into actionable engineering recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead CFD simulations involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and multiphase systems using tools such as ANSYS Fluent, CFX, or STAR-CCM+.
  • Translate complex physical problems into accurate computational models, including geometry preparation, mesh generation, boundary condition definition, and solver setup.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to incorporate CFD analysis and recommendations into CAD models and mechanical designs.
  • Validate simulation results using experimental data, wind tunnel testing, or field measurements.
  • Evaluate and optimize designs for performance, manufacturability, and compliance with applicable industry standards.
  • Document simulation methodologies, results, conclusions, and engineering recommendations in clear technical reports.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline with a focus on fluid mechanics or thermodynamics.
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Hands-on experience with CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, CFX, STAR-CCM+, or OpenFOAM.
  • Strong understanding of turbulence modeling, heat transfer, and boundary conditions.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as SolidWorks and experience preparing geometry for simulation.
  • Ability to analyze and communicate complex simulation results to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting aerospace and/or defense applications.
  • Experience validating CFD models against experimental, wind tunnel, or field-test data.
  • Experience using high-performance computing resources for complex CFD simulations.

How You Will Be Rewarded

The salary range for this role is 118,000 140,000. We offer a comprehensive total rewards approach to compensation, providing incentives and benefits that extend far beyond the base salary. Compensation is determined by the candidates work experience, education, training, and relevant skills.
