What is the difference between Flow Cytometry vs Cell Culture Technician?
| Aspect | Flow Cytometry | Cell Culture Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Laboratory certification, biology or related degree | Biology or related degree, laboratory training |
| Work Environment | Research labs, clinical labs, biotech companies | Cell culture labs, research facilities, biotech firms |
| Industry Usage | Immunology, oncology, cell biology | Biotech, pharmaceuticals, research institutions |
Flow Cytometry and Cell Culture Technicians both work in laboratory settings within biotech and research industries. While Flow Cytometry specialists focus on analyzing cells using specialized equipment, Cell Culture Technicians prepare and maintain cell cultures. Both roles require biology degrees and lab training, but their daily tasks and equipment differ significantly.
What is flow cytometry?
Flow cytometry is a technique that scientists and researchers use to define the characteristics of cells or other microscopic particles. Working within a laboratory as a lab worker, you go through a test process that involves putting a population of cells into liquid. You then put these prepared samples in an instrument called a flow cytometer. In addition to defining physical and chemical characteristics, this process can help count cells, sort cells, detect microorganisms or proteins, or test for specific conditions, such as blood cancers. Cytometry lab workers use computers to record results and produce documentation for research or clinical work.

Job description
The Postdoctoral Researcher position is available in the Immunology laboratory of Dr. Lalit Beura at Brown University (https://sites.brown.edu/beuralab/). Our research spans diverse areas, including:
• Unraveling the Fundamental Mechanisms Governing Mucosal Resident Memory T Cell Development and Persistence.
• Pioneering the Development of Novel In Vitro Systems to Model Immune-Stromal Interactions in Mucosal Tissues.
• Investigating Signals from Commensal and Pathogenic Microbes Influencing T Cell Differentiation and Function.
This search is to identify a suitable postdoctoral candidate to fulfill the following duties in the Beura Lab:
• The postdoc will lead a research program investigating the interaction between reproductive epithelium and immune cells that shape mucosal immunity.
• The postdoc will design, perform, and analyze independent research experiments in collaboration with the P/I.
• The postdoc will mentor junior lab personnel - graduate students, staff, and undergraduates.
• They will contribute to scientific publications by writing and editing articles, preparing quality figures, and analyzing data.
Qualifications
• PhD or MD/PhD degree in Biology.
• Several years of hands-on research experience in in vivo and in vitro experimentation, immunology, and/or microbiology (less than 2 years post-PhD).
• Strong expertise in animal experimentation (mice), preferably in cellular or molecular immunology.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to independently design and conduct experiments and interpret data.
• Proficiency in advanced immunology techniques (e.g., flow cytometry, immune cell phenotyping), histological techniques (e.g., Cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry, epifluorescence, and confocal microscopy), routine molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA and RNA isolation, quantitative Real-Time PCR), and standard tissue culture techniques.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Knowledge and experience in memory T cell biology.
- Hands-on skills in next-generation sequencing analyses, including transcriptional and epigenetic profiling.
- Background in immunology and microbiome studies.
- Prior experience in organoid models and viral transductions.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit a CV, a statement of research interests, up to three representative publications, and names of three references.
