How much do flow cytometry jobs pay per hour?
What is flow cytometry?
Flow cytometry is a technique that scientists and researchers use to define the characteristics of cells or other microscopic particles. Working within a laboratory as a lab worker, you go through a test process that involves putting a population of cells into liquid. You then put these prepared samples in an instrument called a flow cytometer. In addition to defining physical and chemical characteristics, this process can help count cells, sort cells, detect microorganisms or proteins, or test for specific conditions, such as blood cancers. Cytometry lab workers use computers to record results and produce documentation for research or clinical work.
What does a flow cytometrist do?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flow cytometry specialist, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges encountered in a flow cytometry role, and how can they be addressed?
What is the difference between Flow Cytometry vs Cell Culture Technician?
| Aspect | Flow Cytometry | Cell Culture Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Laboratory certification, biology or related degree | Biology or related degree, laboratory training |
| Work Environment | Research labs, clinical labs, biotech companies | Cell culture labs, research facilities, biotech firms |
| Industry Usage | Immunology, oncology, cell biology | Biotech, pharmaceuticals, research institutions |
Flow Cytometry and Cell Culture Technicians both work in laboratory settings within biotech and research industries. While Flow Cytometry specialists focus on analyzing cells using specialized equipment, Cell Culture Technicians prepare and maintain cell cultures. Both roles require biology degrees and lab training, but their daily tasks and equipment differ significantly.

Description
Prelude Therapeutics is seeking highly motivated and skilled candidates for a laboratory-based Research Scientist position in their Wilmington, DE location. Prelude is an early-stage biotechnology company founded by proven scientists in cancer drug development. At Prelude Therapeutics, the Research Scientist will play a key role in our mission to design and develop a pipeline of novel therapies for cancer patients, with a focus on small molecule drugs, targeted protein degraders, and conjugates including Degrader-Antibody Conjugates (DACs) and Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs). We are a team of science-driven and passionate scientists committed to innovative and efficient drug discovery activities within a collaborative and dynamic working environment. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and interactive individual with a background in cell/molecular biology, demonstrating versatility and a willingness to adapt and contribute across various stages of the drug discovery process. Prelude offers a vibrant and collegial work environment and excellent career growth opportunities. Prelude is ideally located within 25 minutes from the Philadelphia International Airport at an emerging research campus at Chestnut Run Innovation & Science Park.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate the potency and selectivity of new molecules in various functional and phenotypic cell-based assays.
- Characterize new molecules through mechanism of action studies.
- Develop, validate, and optimize assay systems to support the detection of cellular and tissue pharmacodynamic markers.
- Conduct specific assays related to degraders, DACs, and ADCs, such as antibody internalization, target degradation, and payload release assays.
- Maintain accurate records of experiments, analyze and interpret results, present summaries, and generate reports of the studies.
- Contribute to project planning and strategy, ensuring timely progress and troubleshooting of experimental challenges.
Qualifications
Education
- PhD with 0-3 years of relevant post-doctoral or industry research experience, or MS with 3-6 years of relevant research experience.
Specific Skills (preferred)
- Hands-on experience with cell/tissue culture, cell viability assays, immunoblotting, quantitative RT-PCR and flow cytometry.
- Experience with the Incucyte platform for live-cell imaging and analysis.
- Hands-on experience working with therapeutic antibodies is preferred, particularly in the context of targeted protein degraders, Degrader-Antibody Conjugates (DACs), and/or Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs).
- Proficiency in data analysis and presentation software.
Personal Characteristics
- Highly self-motivated, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work efficiently both independently and in a team/matrix environment.
- Organized and detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills.
