Floral Processing information

What is floral processing?

Floral processing is the series of steps taken to prepare fresh flowers and foliage for use in arrangements and displays. This includes tasks such as unpacking shipments, cutting stems, removing damaged leaves, hydrating flowers, and adding preservatives to water. Proper floral processing helps extend the life and freshness of flowers, ensuring they look their best for customers and events. Workers in this role often follow strict hygiene and care guidelines to maintain flower quality. The process is essential for florists, event decorators, and wholesale flower businesses.

What are some common challenges faced in a floral processing role, and how can they be managed?

One common challenge in Floral Processing is handling the time-sensitive nature of working with perishable products. Ensuring flowers remain fresh requires careful scheduling, prompt unpacking, and proper storage. Additionally, managing inventory and coordinating with the design team to meet fluctuating order demands can be demanding, especially during peak seasons. Effective communication, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills help manage these challenges and ensure both product quality and workflow efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a floral processing specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Floral Processing Specialist, you need a solid understanding of flower care, handling, and processing techniques, often gained through on-the-job training or experience in floristry. Familiarity with tools such as floral knives, hydration solutions, and inventory management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and teamwork are valuable soft skills for maintaining flower quality and meeting tight deadlines. These skills and qualities ensure that floral products are fresh, attractive, and ready for design or sale, directly impacting customer satisfaction and business success.

Job description

Description:

Dr. Delphinium is seeking a Processing Associate to join our team in Dallas, TX. Our work is guided by Connection, Celebration, Ownership, Drive, Integrity, and Creativity — values that shape how we care for our products, our people, and our craft. This vital role supports our floral operations by maintaining the flower cooler and processing department, ensuring product quality, and providing timely, well-prepared floral inventory for our design teams.

As a Processing Associate, you’ll play an essential part in keeping our workflow moving efficiently behind the scenes. You’ll help receive, process, and organize fresh flowers, maintain cleanliness and organization in the cooler, and support consistent quality standards throughout the day. This role is well-suited for someone who is organized, dependable, and energized by hands-on work in a fast-paced environment — especially someone who takes pride in setting others up for success.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Accurately identify and manage all floral varieties stocked in the floral cooler.
  • Receive, unpack, cut, hydrate, and process incoming flower shipments daily.
  • Monitor and ensure the quality of flowers stored in the coolers.
  • Pick and prepare floral products efficiently for the design team and deliveries.
  • Keep the processing area and flower cooler clean, organized, and compliant with OSHA regulations.
Requirements:
  • A strong service mentality — personable, professional, and motivated to support internal teams.
  • Excellent verbal communication and active listening skills.
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and adaptable to changing needs.
  • Able to remain calm and tactful under pressure.
  • Comfortable forming positive working relationships across departments.
  • Able to recognize and proactively complete additional tasks as needed.
  • Physically capable of working in a cooler (approx. 32°F) for extended periods.
  • Flexible availability including Saturday.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly.
  • Valid Driver's License (CDL not required).
  • Clean driving record with no DUIs or DWIs (must meet insurance requirements).
  • Ability to drive cargo vans and box trucks safely.
  • Tobacco-free workplace; adherence to company policy required during working hours
  • Must pass a drug test and background check.
