What are floater jobs?
Floater jobs require a flexible and adaptable employee who has the qualifications and skills to perform a variety of different job duties. You can find floater jobs in office settings, medical facilities, schools, and warehouses. As a floater, your responsibilities include temporarily covering a position, and you typically pick up shifts as needed. You may float between locations or between departments. For example, if you’re a nurse for a hospital with multiple campuses, as part of the floater pool, you work shifts at whichever campus has the most need. As a floater teacher assistant, you go between classrooms to provide support to teachers.

What is the difference between Floater vs Substitute Teacher?
| Aspect | Floater | Substitute Teacher |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a teaching certification or substitute license | Usually requires a substitute teaching permit or license |
| Work Environment | Works across multiple classrooms or schools, often in different subjects | Works temporarily in a specific classroom, covering for absent teachers |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Common in K-12 education, especially in public schools | Widely used in schools to fill in for teachers |
Both Floater and Substitute Teacher roles involve filling in for absent teachers, but floaters often cover multiple classrooms or subjects regularly, while substitute teachers typically fill in temporarily for specific absences. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right position based on credentials and work environment.
