What is a float phlebotomist?

A Float Phlebotomist is a healthcare professional who travels between different locations, such as hospitals, clinics, or labs, to collect blood samples from patients. They perform venipunctures, label specimens, and ensure proper handling of samples for testing. Because they work in multiple settings, they must quickly adapt to different environments and protocols. Float Phlebotomists often fill in for staff shortages, making flexibility and strong communication skills essential.

What does a float phlebotomist do?

As a Float Phlebotomist, your workweek typically involves traveling between different healthcare facilities or departments to help meet staffing needs and ensure timely patient care. You may be scheduled in various locations each day or week, often stepping in where coverage is most needed, such as outpatient clinics, hospital wards, or specialty labs. This dynamic structure means you’ll interact with diverse patient populations and collaborate with multiple healthcare teams. The float aspect requires adaptability and confidence working in new environments but also offers variety and a broader range of experiences compared to a fixed phlebotomy position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a float phlebotomist?

To thrive as a Float Phlebotomist, you need a solid understanding of blood collection techniques, venipuncture, specimen processing, and infection control, typically supported by completion of a phlebotomy training program and certification (such as CPT or PBT). Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), electronic health records (EHR), and point-of-care devices is common in this role. Outstanding customer service, flexibility, and strong communication skills help build trust with patients and allow you to adapt to varying team environments. These competencies enable Float Phlebotomists to provide consistent, high-quality care while working efficiently across multiple sites or departments.
