A Flight Service Station (FSS) specialist provides critical aviation support services to pilots, such as weather briefings, flight plan processing, and emergency assistance. They operate primarily in non-towered airport environments and assist with in-flight navigation and communications. FSS specialists do not control air traffic but serve as an essential resource for pilots to enhance flight safety and efficiency.
Flight Service Station employees often encounter challenges such as managing a high volume of flight plan filings during peak travel periods or responding to rapidly changing weather conditions. They must quickly prioritize multiple requests while maintaining accuracy, especially when providing pilots with critical updates or emergency information. The need for constant vigilance and clear communication can be demanding, but these challenges also make the work engaging for individuals who enjoy fast-paced, detail-oriented environments. Effective teamwork and staying current on procedural updates help staff navigate these demands successfully.
To excel in a Flight Service Station role, you need a thorough understanding of aeronautical information, strong communication abilities, and often a background in aviation or air traffic services. Familiarity with aviation weather systems, NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) processing tools, and FAA certification may be required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential soft skills. These competencies are vital to ensure the safe and efficient coordination of flight plans and the accurate dissemination of critical flight information to pilots.

FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUPPORT TECHNICIAN
Reports To: Director of Flight Operations
Status: Full-Time, On-Site, Hourly, Non-Exempt
Department: Flight Operations
Pay Range: $18.00–$23.00 Per Hour, Based on Experience and Qualifications.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Flight Operations Support Technician provides day-to-day aircraft line support by fueling, moving, positioning, cleaning, and staging aircraft for flight and maintenance activities. This position works across Flight Operations, Production, Experimental, and the Repair Station, responding to the operating priority of the day and helping prevent skilled personnel from being pulled away from their primary responsibilities to complete routine support tasks.
Working closely with pilots, mechanics, inspectors, test personnel, and other operational employees, the Flight Operations Support Technician supports aircraft readiness and the timely completion of scheduled work. The role requires regular movement among operating areas, responsiveness to changing priorities, and careful attention to aircraft condition, safety requirements, documentation, and controlled work areas.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ROLE
Aircraft Line Support
• Fuel aircraft in accordance with approved company procedures, aircraft limitations, and assigned work instructions.
• Move, tow, and position aircraft between approved hangar, ramp, fueling, maintenance, and flight-line locations using authorized equipment and procedures.
• Stage aircraft and required ground-support items so pilots, mechanics, inspectors, and test personnel can begin scheduled work without avoidable delays.
• Clean aircraft and maintain orderly aircraft staging and support areas, including active foreign object debris (FOD) control.
• Assist with preflight preparation and aircraft-readiness checks within the assigned scope.
• Promptly route open items or discrepancies to the responsible pilot, Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT), Quality representative, or supervisor.
Cross-Functional Support amp; Communication
• Coordinate daily with Flight Operations, Production, Experimental, and Repair Station personnel.
• Actively seek the next operating priority after completing an assigned task rather than waiting for additional work to arrive.
• Communicate clearly when an aircraft is ready, when a task is delayed, or when support from a certificated or authorized person is required.
• Remain responsive and productive across operating areas, recognizing that this is a mobile support role rather than a single-station assignment.
Documentation amp; Reporting
• Assist with document-readiness checks and audits as assigned, including identifying missing or incomplete records without independently approving or signing controlled documents.
• Accurately record fuel, aircraft movement, servicing, and other assigned activities in the applicable company system or log.
• Report unsafe conditions, equipment problems, aircraft damage, fuel concerns, or procedural deviations immediately.
• Stop work when continued activity could create a safety risk.
Safety amp; Procedural Expectations
• Place safety and procedural discipline ahead of schedule considerations.
• Follow all fueling, towing, ramp, personal protective equipment, FOD, and aircraft-handling requirements.
• Treat aircraft condition, configuration, documentation, and controlled work areas with the attention expected in an aviation manufacturing and flight-test environment.
• Accept coaching and complete required company training before independently operating equipment or performing assigned servicing tasks.
Performance Expectations
• Ensure aircraft are fueled, positioned, and staged accurately and on time for the supported operation.
• Complete routine line-support work to reduce avoidable use of A amp;P mechanics and other skilled personnel without assuming inspection or maintenance responsibilities.
• Complete fueling, towing, FOD control, documentation, and discrepancy reporting without preventable errors or damage.
• Provide Flight Operations and supported departments with timely status updates and dependable daily support.
Development Opportunity
• Gain direct exposure to flight-line, production, experimental, maintenance, and Repair Station operations.
• Develop experience that may support future growth within aviation operations.
• Understand that placement in this role does not guarantee advancement, maintenance privileges, certification, or transfer into another position.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
• Demonstrated reliability, attention to detail, and willingness to work across departments based on daily priorities.
• Ability to follow written procedures, verbal direction, safety controls, and documentation requirements.
• Ability to complete company training and authorization for fueling, towing, aircraft movement, and assigned ground-support equipment.
• Ability to work safely around aircraft, fuel, vehicles, moving equipment, noise, and changing weather conditions.
• Ability to communicate and work collaboratively with employees across multiple operating areas.
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous experience in aircraft line service, fueling, ground handling, production, maintenance support, or another safety-sensitive operating environment.
• Mechanical aptitude and an interest in developing within flight-line, maintenance, production, or aviation operations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
• Ability to bend, reach, lift, and handle equipment while completing assigned aircraft-support tasks.
• Ability to assist with team aircraft-movement activities.
• Ability to work safely in hangar, ramp, flight-line, maintenance, and other operational environments.
• Ability to work around aircraft, fuel, vehicles, moving equipment, noise, and changing weather conditions.
