CertificationsRN license, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)RN license, ACLS, PALS
Work EnvironmentAir ambulance, helicopters, fixed-wing aircraftHospital emergency departments
Employer & IndustryAir medical services, hospitals with transport teamsHospitals, trauma centers

Both Flight Nurses and Emergency Room Nurses require RN licensure and advanced certifications like ACLS and PALS. The roles overlap in skills but differ mainly in environment and mode of patient transport.

Are flight nurses in high demand?

Flight nurses are in high demand due to the specialized skills required for emergency medical transport in aircraft. The profession often requires certifications such as Critical Care or Emergency Nursing, and job growth is driven by the need for rapid, specialized patient care in emergency situations. Overall, employment opportunities for flight nurses are expected to grow steadily in the coming years.

Can you work for an airline as a flight nurse?

Flight nurses are typically employed by medical transport companies or hospitals rather than airlines directly. They provide in-flight critical care during patient transports, often working on specialized air ambulance or helicopter services, and require certifications such as Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

How to get hired as a flight nurse?

To become a flight nurse, candidates typically need a valid registered nurse (RN) license, critical care or emergency nursing experience, and certification such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Experience in trauma, emergency, or critical care settings is highly valued, and applicants often undergo specialized training in aeromedical transport and safety protocols. Strong communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and flexibility for irregular hours are also important for securing a flight nurse position.
