Job Summary
Candidates successfully hired through the Fire Inspector Lateral process may be eligible to receive credit for time served. Pay shall be provided at 5% above or below the candidate's current base wages with their previous employer, without exceeding SCFPD step 3 (out of 5 possible steps). Lateral candidates will receive a preloaded leave balance of 40 hours of annual leave and 80 hours of sick leave upon successful completion of 6 (six) months of employment.
Under general direction of the Fire Marshal or designee, incumbents are responsible for performing a variety of inspections and enforcement activities of public, commercial, industrial, residential and other buildings/properties to ensure compliance with the International Fire Code (IFC), Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS), and Nevada Administrative Codes (NAC), and related federal, state, and local regulations in relation to fire prevention and suppression systems inspections and code enforcement; actively participates in and provides public educational fire and life safety awareness programs.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the journey level class in the Fire Inspector class series. The Fire Inspector II is distinguished from the Fire Inspector I by the level of experience obtained and the level of independence required. The incumbent works under general and direct supervision of the Fire Marshal. The position will require incumbent to work autonomously and always professionally to complete essential functions and other duties as assigned. The incumbent will be required to conduct multiple types of fire related inspections on new and existing structures.
Licensing, Education, & Other Requirements
Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate's degree in fire science or related field- preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in the field of fire prevention and fire inspections, or other inspection field
  • General knowledge of industrial, commercial, and non-commercial plan checking, fire prevention inspections, code enforcement, or building trades and construction as related to fire prevention - strongly preferred.
  • Experience in fire operations - preferred.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector II
  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner
  • Child Protection Services (CPS) Car Seat Technician certification - within 12 months
  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Nevada Class C driver's license appropriate for vehicles and other equipment operated.
  • Valid CPR card
  • Pass a criminal background investigation.
  • NFPA/IFSAC Fire Service Instructor I - within 12 months
