Limited-Scope Orthopedic X-Ray Technician – On-Call/PRN

Schedule: On-Call/PRN | Hours and shifts based on coverage needs

Pay Rate: $70.00–$80.00 per hour

Additional Coverage: Occasional coverage at the San Rafael location may be required.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Limited-Scope Orthopedic X-Ray Technician to provide on-call and PRN coverage for a busy, patient-focused orthopedic practice in San Francisco. This position will support the practice during staff absences, scheduling gaps, increased patient volume, and other coverage needs.

The technician will perform diagnostic X-rays within the categories authorized by their active California Limited Permit. The ideal candidate will have strong upper- and lower-extremity imaging experience, excellent positioning skills, and the flexibility to accept shifts based on the practice’s needs.

Schedule Expectations

• On-call/PRN position with no guaranteed minimum number of hours.
• Shifts will be offered based on patient volume and staffing needs.
• Coverage may include planned assignments and occasional short-notice requests.
• Availability during normal weekday clinic hours is preferred.
• The technician may accept available shifts based on their availability.
• Occasional San Rafael coverage may be requested.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic X-ray examinations within all categories authorized under the technician’s active California Limited Permit.
• Obtain high-quality upper- and lower-extremity images commonly required in an orthopedic practice.
• Review imaging orders and confirm the correct patient, examination, anatomical site, and laterality.
• Explain imaging procedures clearly and professionally to patients.
• Properly position patients and imaging equipment to obtain accurate diagnostic images.
• Modify positioning techniques based on a patient’s injury, mobility limitations, pain level, or physical condition.
• Select and adjust exposure factors according to the examination, patient condition, and established imaging protocols.
• Apply appropriate radiation-protection and exposure-reduction practices.
• Evaluate completed images for proper positioning, exposure, anatomical coverage, and diagnostic quality.
• Enter, retrieve, and maintain imaging information through digital radiography and PACS systems.
• Accurately document completed examinations in the electronic health record.
• Communicate with physicians and clinical team members regarding imaging orders, patient needs, or examination concerns.
• Maintain clean, organized, and properly supplied imaging rooms.
• Perform routine equipment checks and report technical or safety concerns promptly.
• Follow all HIPAA, infection-control, radiation-safety, and workplace-safety requirements.
• Assist with patient movement and transfers when necessary.
• Work independently while collaborating with physicians, medical assistants, and other clinical team members.
• Help maintain efficient patient flow in a fast-paced orthopedic environment.
• Provide occasional coverage at the San Rafael location when needed.

Required Qualifications

• Active and unrestricted California Limited Permit X-Ray Technician certification.
• Authorization in Extremities is required.
• Strong knowledge of extremity anatomy, radiographic positioning, exposure selection, and radiation safety.
• Experience using digital radiography equipment and PACS.
• Ability to perform only examinations authorized under the individual’s California Limited Permit.
• Ability to work independently and manage a high-volume imaging workload.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing diagnostically acceptable images.
• Excellent patient-service and communication skills.
• Dependability and the ability to respond promptly to scheduling and coverage requests.
• Ability and willingness to travel occasionally between San Francisco and San Rafael.
• Ability to stand for extended periods, position patients, assist with transfers, and lift or move up to approximately 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

• Additional limited-permit anatomical categories.
• Previous orthopedic, musculoskeletal, sports medicine, or outpatient imaging experience.
• Experience performing upper- and lower-extremity imaging.
• Experience working in a fast-paced specialty practice.
• Familiarity with Epic or a comparable electronic health record system.
• Experience with modern digital radiography and PACS platforms.
• Flexible weekday availability and the ability to accommodate occasional short-notice shifts.

Scope-of-Practice Notice

This position is limited to radiographic examinations permitted under the technician’s active California Limited Permit. The technician may not perform fluoroscopy, advanced imaging, or examinations outside the anatomical categories authorized by their permit. All work must comply with California scope-of-practice requirements and established facility protocols.
