Flexible Signal Processing Engineer information

What does a flexible signal processing engineer do?

A Flexible Signal Processing Engineer designs, develops, and implements algorithms and systems for processing signals—such as audio, video, radar, or communications signals—across a range of applications. The 'flexible' aspect refers to their ability to adapt to different platforms, technologies, and requirements, often working with both hardware and software solutions. These engineers use mathematical techniques and specialized tools to filter, analyze, and interpret raw data signals, improving performance and functionality. They often collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate their solutions into larger systems, such as telecommunication devices or medical imaging equipment.

What are the typical collaboration dynamics for a flexible signal processing engineer within a multidisciplinary team?

As a Flexible Signal Processing Engineer, you’ll often work closely with hardware engineers, software developers, and system architects to integrate your algorithms into broader systems. Collaboration usually includes regular design meetings, code reviews, and troubleshooting sessions to ensure seamless signal flow and system performance. You may be tasked with translating project requirements into technical specifications and providing feedback on cross-functional dependencies. Effective communication and adaptability are vital, as priorities can shift quickly depending on project milestones and client feedback.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible signal processing engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Flexible Signal Processing Engineer, you need a solid background in digital signal processing (DSP), mathematics, and electrical engineering, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB, Simulink, Python, and programming languages such as C/C++, along with experience in FPGA or embedded systems, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication help you manage complex projects and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for developing innovative signal processing solutions and ensuring adaptability in dynamic technological environments.

What is the difference between Flexible Signal Processing Engineer vs Digital Signal Processing Engineer?

AspectFlexible Signal Processing EngineerDigital Signal Processing Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, telecommunications, aerospaceTelecommunications, consumer electronics, audio/video industries
Industry UsageFlexible, adaptable to various signal processing tasks and platformsSpecialized in digital signal algorithms and hardware/software implementation
Comparison FocusBroader scope, adaptable to multiple signal types and applicationsFocus on digital signals and processing techniques

The main difference is that a Flexible Signal Processing Engineer works across various signal types and platforms, offering adaptable solutions, while a Digital Signal Processing Engineer specializes in digital signals and algorithms. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and are common in tech and communications industries, but their focus areas differ in scope and application.

Job description

Job Description
Description
SAIC is seeking a talented and motivated Electrical Engineer with experience in radio frequency (RF), digital signal processing (DSP), and system testing to join our cutting-edge engineering team. The ideal candidate will contribute to the design, development, and testing of advanced systems, including maritime off-board countermeasures and other sophisticated electronic warfare solutions.
This role offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of technology, delivering mission-critical innovation for military and defense applications. The selected candidate will engage in activities across the product lifecycle, from initial system and component design to prototyping, testing, and deployment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and characterize RF system designs, waveforms, and architectures for use in maritime electronic warfare and off-board countermeasure systems.
  • Design and implement digital signal processing algorithms to detect, process, and mitigate advanced threats in challenging operational environments.
  • Support the integration and testing of RF, digital signal processing, and broader system components, ensuring alignment with customer requirements and performance objectives.
  • Conduct in-depth modeling, simulation, and analysis of RF and signal processing systems for performance and environmental robustness.
  • Utilize signal generators, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, and other RF test equipment to evaluate system performance and troubleshoot functionality.
  • Collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams, including mechanical, software, and systems engineering professionals, to advance integrated designs and implementation.
  • Conduct system-level performance evaluations in laboratory, field, or system environments, with a focus on environmental and electromagnetic interference (EMI) requirements.
  • Create and deliver detailed technical documentation, including system descriptions, test plans, analysis reports, and results.
  • Stay up to date on advancements in RF and electronic warfare technologies, proposing innovative solutions to meet emerging threats.

  • Qualifications
    Basic Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
    • 3-5 years of experience in radio frequency (RF) circuit design, digital signal processing, or radar/signal processing systems.
    • Fundamental understanding of digital and analog circuit design, including schematics, simulations, and PCB design.
    • Proficiency with RF simulation and circuit design tools (such as HFSS, ADS, AWR Microwave Office, or CST).
    • Experience with MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for algorithm development and data analysis.
    • Strong hands-on experience with RF test equipment (e.g., network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes).
    • Knowledge of signal protocols, modulation techniques, and signal chain analysis.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrated experience in technical documentation and interfacing with diverse teams.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field.
    • Familiarity or experience with maritime off-board countermeasures systems or electronic warfare systems.
    • Hands-on experience with embedded systems interfacing, FPGA/DSP programming, or hardware-software integration (e.g., VHDL, Verilog, microcontroller programming).
    • Exposure to MIL-STD or DoD system requirements, especially those related to RF and electromagnetic compatibility (MIL-STD-461).
    • Experience designing and testing systems in harsh environments, including maritime or underwater environments.
    • Understanding of acoustic signal processing, radar technologies, or RF emitter systems.
    • Active or ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance.
