What We Look For In a Coding Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of programming fundamentals including variables, loops, conditionals, functions, data structures, basic algorithms, debugging, and introductory concepts across languages like Python, JavaScript, and Scratch. Ability to explain computational thinking, pattern recognition, abstraction, and step-by-step problem solving while preparing students for computer science courses, coding bootcamps, or technology career pathways.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching logical thinking, code construction, and debugging strategies for beginning and intermediate coders. Guides students through breaking problems into smaller steps, writing and testing code iteratively, using loops and conditionals effectively, and building simple applications. Emphasizes hands-on project creation and connects coding to creative expression, game building, web design, and real-world technology innovation.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with coding curricula for various age groups and common challenges such as understanding abstract logic concepts, debugging syntax errors, and maintaining motivation through challenging problems. Adapts instruction using block-based tools like Scratch, text-based languages like Python, and project-based learning to support learners from elementary students through adults beginning their coding journey.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
