AY2627 Math Tutor (Work-Study Preferred)
Hello Duquesne Mathematics Majors, Applied Mathematics Majors,Data Science Majors, and Biomedical Engineering Majors!
The Department of Mathematics and ComputerScience seeks to hire Mathematics tutors for the Fall26/Spring27 academic yearat minimum. Mathematics tutors provide support to undergraduate students inintroductory, intermediate, and some advanced mathematics courses. In addition,you will have the opportunity to tutor some statistics and computer programmingcourses that you are comfortable with and proficient in.
Note: If you are really interested in being amath tutor but you don't fully meet all of the qualifications listed below,please email tutor supervisor, Alex Lipecky, at lipeckya@duq.edu to discussfurther.
You are a potential candidate for the Mathtutoring position if you are an undergraduate student at Duquesne and:
1) You have completed at least two of thefollowing six courses with a letter grade of B+ or higher:
Math 116 - Calculus II
Math 215 - Calculus III
Math 250 - Foundations of Higher Math
Math 301 - Introduction to Probability andStatistics I
Math 310 - Linear Algebra
Math 314 - Differential Equations
2) You have maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higheracross all your Mathematics courses.
3) You can commit to being a tutor for theFall26/Spring27 academic year at minimum.
4) Upon request, you can provide areference/referral from Duquesne Mathematics/Statistics faculty members whotaught you in at least one course.
5) You are confident in your understanding ofconcepts in low and mid-level Math courses, and you are confident that you canexplain those concepts to tutees.
Although not requirements, attributes such aspunctuality, patience, confidence, work ethic, enthusiasm, and creativity arevalued. Students who are work-study eligible through the Federal Work-Studyprogram may receive some preference, but we also hire tutors who are notwork-study eligible.
Hourly Rate: $12 per hour
Maximum Tutoring Hours per Week: 15 hours
You are paid regardless of whether or not astudent signs up and receives tutoring during your scheduled tutoring hours.
We prefer tutors to provide a minimum of 12hours per week.
You will provide tutoring on the 4th floor ofCollege Hall in our designated Tutoring room along with your fellow mathtutors.
Tutoring hours are broken up into 30-minutesegments. It's common for a tutee to seek either a 30 minute or 60 minutetutoring session.
You may offer tutoring on M-T-W-TH-F with yourearliest start slot 9:00-9:30 am and latest start slot 4:30 pm-5:00 pm.
You may offer in-person tutoring only orin-person + online tutoring. If you offer in-person + online tutoring, thetutee will choose their preference. You must still be physically located on the4th floor of College Hall when conducting online tutoring. Most tutees preferin-person tutoring.
