What is a flexible math tutor?

A Flexible Math Tutor is an educator who provides personalized math instruction to students, often on a schedule or platform that allows both the tutor and student to choose convenient times for sessions. This flexibility can include online or in-person lessons, varying hours, and adapting teaching methods to fit each student's learning style. Flexible Math Tutors help learners build confidence and improve their math skills by offering support tailored to individual needs, making math more accessible and less intimidating.

How do flexible math tutors manage their schedules and communicate with students?

Flexible math tutors often use online scheduling tools or platforms that allow both the tutor and students to select convenient times for sessions. Clear communication is key—they usually establish preferred methods (such as email or messaging apps) to coordinate session times, share resources, and address questions between meetings. Tutors must be highly organized and responsive to adapt to students’ changing availability while maintaining consistent progress. This flexibility can also mean tutoring students from different time zones or grade levels, so setting clear expectations and boundaries is important for a balanced workload.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible math tutor?

To thrive as a Flexible Math Tutor, you need a solid understanding of mathematics, strong instructional abilities, and at least a bachelor's degree in math or a related field. Familiarity with digital teaching platforms, online whiteboards, and video conferencing tools is essential for remote or hybrid tutoring. Excellent communication, patience, and adaptability help tutors effectively connect with diverse learners and adjust to varying educational needs. These skills ensure students receive personalized, effective support, leading to improved understanding and academic success.

Part-Time Middle School Tutor (Grades 6-8, Multi-Subject)

Teacher Tutors

Livingston, NJ • On-site

$40 - $50/hr

Part-time

Posted 17 days ago

Job description

Teacher Tutors is hiring a part-time Middle School Tutor to join our team on a flexible basis. This role is ideal for current or former middle school teachers who are comfortable working across subjects and know how to meet students wherever they are. Supporting students in grades 6 through 8 across their core academic subjects, homework, and study skills.

You'll work with students across a range of subjects and goals: middle school math and pre-algebra, reading comprehension and writing, science, and social studies, along with the organization and study habits that help this age group thrive. Sessions take place in students' homes or at our Livingston, NJ office. This is an in-person role, not an online-only position. We do our best to match families to tutors based on your preferred travel radius. You tell us how far you're willing to drive, and we work within that.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver one-on-one tutoring sessions tailored to each student's courses, families' expectations, and learning goals.
  • Support students across core subjects (math, reading, writing, science, and social studies) as well as homework completion, test prep, and long-term projects.
  • Move fluidly between subjects within a single session, following the student's homework and priorities that day.
  • Build the study skills and habits that set middle schoolers up for high school (organization, time management, note-taking, and test preparation).
  • Track progress across sessions and adjust pacing, materials, and difficulty based on what's working.
  • Submit a short session note after each tutoring session and flag concerns to our Director early.
  • Communicate clearly and warmly with parents.
  • Contribute to our team's shared practice: share what's working, ask questions, and help us keep raising the bar.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (any field). A degree in education and a current or former teaching certification are strongly preferred. Master's or PhD candidates are welcome.
  • Classroom teaching experience at the middle school level, or comparable experience working with this age group across multiple subjects.
  • Comfort supporting the full middle school core: math through pre-algebra, reading and writing, science, and social studies.
  • Strong communication skills and the patience to work with students who may arrive frustrated, distracted, or low on confidence.
  • A warm, encouraging presence that puts students at ease and keeps them engaged.
  • Genuine enjoyment of working with middle schoolers and an understanding of what this age group needs, both academically and emotionally.
  • Ability to plan individualized sessions and adapt in real time when a planned approach isn't landing, including explaining the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks.
  • Availability for afternoon, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with extra capacity around midterms and finals.
  • Comfort with educational technology.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license for in-home sessions.

Preferred

  • Current or former middle school classroom teaching experience across more than one subject area
  • Experience helping middle schoolers build confidence and independence, not just raise grades
  • Experience supporting executive function and study skills (organization, planning, and test preparation) for this age group
  • Familiarity with the New Jersey middle school curriculum and how it prepares students for high school placement
  • Experience working with students with a range of learning needs and styles
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, or other languages common in the communities we serve)

Benefits

Compensation & employment status

Pay range: $40–$50/hour, based on degree and experience

W-2 (default): Most part-time tutors join as W-2 employees. Teacher Tutors handles payroll, taxes, and provides liability coverage during sessions.

1099 (optional): Tutors who prefer 1099 contractor status are welcome, provided they carry their own professional liability insurance and operate through a registered LLC. Documentation will be requested during onboarding.

Coverage area

We serve families across northern New Jersey, with most in-home sessions concentrated in Essex, Morris, Union, and Bergen counties. When you join, you'll let us know your preferred travel radius from home, and we'll match you with students within that range.
