Location(s): St. Paul

Pay Rate: $16.50 hour

Hours: 3-4/week

Application Deadline: Tuesday, July 14th 2026

JOB SUMMARYAssist students enrolled in Principle Economics courses (Econ 251 and 252) in understanding economic concepts, working through homework and other assignments, and answering student questions in their preparation for examinations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Tutor students in their economics homework, test prep, and studying habits using materials provided by instructors
  • Help students with their understanding of the curriculum without providing the answers for them; make sure the students can get to the answer on their own
  • Participate in tutor orientation and training sessions
  • Visit Econ 251 and 252 classrooms at the beginning of each semester to promote tutoring services
  • Track and take notes for each appointment in Salesforce

TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

Effective communication skills. Tutoring strengthens your communication skills and shows employers you can clearly explain complex concepts, an ability highly valued in any profession.

SCHEDULING & AVAILABILITY

Tutoring services are offered in person Monday-Thursday from 9:00 am-8:00 pm and online Sundays from 4:00-8:00 pm. Tutors are scheduled for shifts within these timeframes; shifts are not available outside of these hours.

Shifts are typically 1.5-2 hours long. To be considered for the position, applicants must have availability for at least two shifts per week. Preference will be given to students with more flexible schedules to help accommodate student demand and scheduling needs. Also, remember, you are a part of a team of tutors, so we need to accommodate across the group.

Work schedules are established at the beginning of the semester and remain consistent from week to week.

Applications submitted without completed availability information will not be considered.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have taken Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, and at least one of the Economic Theory courses (Econ 352: Microeconomic Theory preferred).  Your academic performance in these courses will be reviewed as part of the selection process.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate complex economic principles and concepts to students in our introductory courses. This will require tutors to be able to explain concepts in an understandable and concise manner.
  • Ability to balance outside responsibilities of work, schoolwork, and outside life. Tutors are essential to Principles students' learning and critical to the department's mission to teach students to think critically about the world using economics analysis.
  • Tutoring schedules are set before the start of the semester, and tutors are expected to work the same weekly schedule throughout the semester. On rare occasions when a fellow tutor is unable to cover a shift (due to illness, for example) we may reach out to ask if you can take over a shift. We ask that you be flexible in these cases and help if at all possible. It is essential to have all shifts staffed, as students are counting on tutors to be there.
  • The University provides reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities who require and request accommodations in order to perform the essential functions of the job

To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
