Job description

Position Summary

The 3D Printing Operator is responsible for preparing, operating, and maintaining additive manufacturing equipment to produce high‑quality parts. This role involves managing print jobs from initial setup through post‑processing, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to engineering specifications.Report to the Engineering ManagerKey Responsibilities3D Printer Operation

  • Set up and operate 3D printers (FDM/SLA/SLS/other technologies depending on the organization).
  • Prepare build platforms, load materials, calibrate machines, and initiate print jobs.
  • Monitor printing processes to ensure successful builds and troubleshoot issues as they arise.

File & Model Preparation

  • Import and prepare 3D CAD files (STL/OBJ) for printing using slicing software.
  • Adjust print parameters (layer height, infill, supports, orientation) based on job requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers or designers to optimize models for printability.

Post‑Processing

  • Remove completed prints from build platforms safely and efficiently.
  • Perform post‑processing tasks such as:
    • Support removal
    • Sanding, smoothing, or curing
    • Vapor smoothing or media blasting (if applicable)
    • Dyeing, painting, or finishing operations
  • Inspect printed parts for dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

Quality Control

  • Measure and verify parts using calipers, micrometers, or other inspection tools.
  • Document print results, defects, and recommended adjustments.
  • Maintain a log of builds, material usage, and machine performance.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Perform routine maintenance on 3D printers, such as:
    • Nozzle changes
    • Bed leveling
    • Resin vat cleaning
    • Filter replacements
  • Diagnose and resolve common print failures (warping, layer shifting, under‑extrusion, etc.).

Material Handling

  • Manage inventory of filaments, resins, powders, and consumables.
  • Follow proper safety procedures for handling specialized or hazardous materials.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with engineers, designers, and production teams to meet project deadlines.
  • Communicate print status, constraints, and recommendations for design adjustments.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with at least one 3D printing technology (FDM/SLA/SLS/DMLS/etc.).
  • Familiarity with slicing software (e.g., Cura, PrusaSlicer, PreForm, GrabCAD).
  • Basic CAD knowledge (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, AutoCAD, or similar preferred).
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and interpret tolerances.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity for small‑part handling and assembly.
