Job description

Position Description
Employees in this classification are responsible for providing professional nursing care in an assigned specialty or sub-specialty clinic. They perform a variety of general and specialized nursing duties as part of a total health care team to provide the patient with complete evaluations. Employees in this position generally assist the head nurse in the supervision of other clinic personnel and may substitute for this person in the event of his/her absence. May supervise and instruct subordinate nursing personnel. Receives supervision from head nurse or physician, functions independently within guidelines. May supervise ancillary nursing personnel in the performance of certain tasks, and assists in training personnel. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals.
Major/Essential Functions
  • Serves as the primary clinical nurse supporting Pediatric specialists in the delivery of comprehensive outpatient specialty care, providing clinical support, patient education, care coordination, and nursing services for a variety of pediatric specialty populations.
  • Provides professional nursing care to pediatric patients in the Pediatric Nephrology and Pediatric Specialty clinics utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Serves as the primary clinical nurse supporting the Pediatric Nephrologist and other Pediatric Specialists as assigned in the delivery of comprehensive outpatient specialty care for children with complex medical needs.
  • Performs patient assessments including obtaining medical histories, medication reconciliation, vital signs, growth measurements, and clinical documentation within the electronic medical record.
  • Coordinates patient care before, during, and after clinic visits to promote continuity of care and timely access to specialty services.
  • Provides patient and family education regarding disease processes, medications, treatment plans, laboratory testing, imaging, nutrition, hydration, home monitoring, and follow-up care.
  • Reviews laboratory and diagnostic results with providers and assists in communicating treatment recommendations and care plans to patients and families.
  • Coordinates referrals, specialty testing, hospital follow-up, infusion services, dialysis coordination (when applicable), and multidisciplinary care with internal and external healthcare providers.
  • Assists with medication prior authorizations, prescription refills, durable medical equipment requests, and other clinical documentation necessary to support patient care.
  • Triages incoming patient calls, electronic messages, and urgent clinical concerns utilizing established protocols and provider guidance.
  • Maintains accurate clinical documentation within the electronic medical record while ensuring compliance with TTUHSC policies, HIPAA requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, clinical workflow optimization, and patient safety activities.
  • Collaborates effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, patient services specialists, laboratory personnel, pharmacists, social workers, and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Supports the educational mission of TTUHSC by fostering a positive learning environment for medical students, residents, and other learners.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of one year of nursing experience in pediatrics, ambulatory care, family medicine, nephrology, or another specialty practice.
  • Previous experience in an outpatient clinic, academic medical practice, or pediatric specialty clinic.
  • Knowledge of insurance authorization processes, medication prior authorizations, and referral coordination is preferred.
  • Experience utilizing electronic medical records (Epic preferred; other EMR experience acceptable).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.

Required Qualifications
Completion of a Board of Nursing accredited program of professional nursing or scheduled to complete a program of professional nursing within 120 days of applying for a position. Current Registered Nursing license in the state of Texas or the attainment of a temporary permit from the Board of Nursing to practice professional nursing pending full licensure in the state of Texas. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX- RN) on the first attempt. No experience required.

Visa Information
TTUHSC, at its sole discretion, may initiate new H-1B I-129 visa petitions in accordance with the directive issued by Governor Abbott. Approval from the Texas Workforce Commission is required.
