Job description

Job Title: Custodian
Starting Pay Rate: $20.75 per hour ($21.25 after 3 months)
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 3pm-11pm, with mandatory overtime as needed
Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor
Job Summary:
We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Custodian to join our team. This role is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized manufacturing facility by performing a variety of janitorial and custodial duties throughout the plant, offices, breakrooms, and restrooms. The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, follows safety procedures, and is comfortable working in a manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform general janitorial duties throughout the facility, including cleaning breakrooms, restrooms, offices, and production areas
  • Sweep and mop floors for approximately 3-4 hours per day
  • Operate an electric ride-on floor scrubber for 4-5 hours per day to clean production floors
  • Empty and clean floor scrubbers, including removing debris and disposing of wastewater in designated areas
  • Collect trash using rolling brute barrels and dispose of waste in outdoor compactors
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms and cafeteria areas using the Kaivac cleaning system
  • Lift and pour 5-gallon buckets of floor wax (up to 50 lbs.) into mop buckets as needed
  • Strip and wax floors using floor buffers on a scheduled basis
  • Change 55-gallon drums of cleaning chemicals using appropriate equipment and team lifting techniques
  • Replace 45-pound propane cylinders on floor cleaning equipment as needed
  • Perform occasional cleaning of elevated surfaces using step ladders or rolling stairs
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety procedures
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Other duties as assigned

Shift is 8 hours. May work overtime up to 10-12 hours. Two 10-minute breaks per shift and a 20-minute meal break. Employees are paid for the entire time they are clocked in and do not clock out for breaks if taken on campus.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Must be able to communicate in English
  • Previous custodial or janitorial experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred
  • Ability to safely operate custodial equipment, including ride-on floor scrubbers and floor buffers
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Must be dependable with a good attendance record
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and safety procedures

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling throughout the shift
  • Sweep and mop floors for extended periods
  • Repeatedly climb on and off ride-on floor scrubbers with a step height of approximately 15.5 inches
  • Full range of motion of the neck and back required to safely operate ride-on cleaning equipment
  • Occasional climbing of step ladders or rolling stairs to clean elevated areas
  • Ability to shovel up to 25 lbs. of wet debris from floor scrubber collection bins
  • Ability to change 45-pound propane cylinders and assist with moving 55-gallon drums using proper equipment and team lifting techniques

Work Environment:
  • The work environment is representative of conditions typical for a manufacturing facility and is not climate-controlled.
  • Frequent exposure to dust, dirt, wet floors, cleaning chemicals, moving equipment, and varying temperatures.
  • Work involves operating powered cleaning equipment and working around production activities.
  • Safety precautions and proper PPE must always be followed to reduce exposure to workplace hazards.
