Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine Research & Development LLC, a Johnson & Johnson company, is recruiting for a Principal Scientist, R&D Data, Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (DDSAI) - Immunology. This position will be located at one of our offices in either Cambridge, MA; Spring House, PA; San Diego, CA; Titusville, NJ; or Raritan, NJ.


Position Summary

The Principal Scientist will be instrumental in contributing to the design, evaluation, and execution of Data Science, Digital Health & AI (DDSAI) strategies in alignment with Immunology Therapeutic Area (IMM TA) priorities and objectives. They will partner with DDSAI colleagues and IMM TA stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and advance data science, digital health, AI, and technology-enabled opportunities across the portfolio. This role helps translate emerging capabilities into practical solutions that improve decision making, research execution, and development outcomes.

To successfully meet these objectives, this individual will work closely with clinical project teams and functional partners across Translational Science, Translational Medicine, Discovery, Late Development, Market Access, Medical Affairs, Data Platforms, Insights & Analytics, and other relevant functions.


Responsibilities

  • Contribute scientific and strategic input to Immunology R&D DDSAI priorities spanning individual projects, portfolio initiatives, and collaborations with internal and external partners.
  • Partner with DDSAI colleagues and Therapeutic Area teams to define, evaluate, and execute high-impact data science, digital health, AI, and analytics initiatives aligned with Immunology R&D objectives.
  • Collaborate with Therapeutic Area teams, DDSAI Data Platform teams, Insights & Analytics, and other DDSAI functions to design and implement data science use cases, develop roadmaps from pilot to scale, and identify opportunities for reusable capabilities and workflow standardization.
  • Develop a deep understanding of imaging, digital health, clinical, and real-world data assets and align scientific use cases with appropriate datasets, technologies, and partners.
  • Map and analyze scientific and operational workflows to identify process improvements, automation opportunities, and future-state solutions that enhance research execution.
  • Partner with platform and engineering teams to shape scalable data, analytics, and digital capabilities that are reusable, governed, interoperable, and sustainable.
  • Evaluate and pilot emerging technologies, including generative AI, agentic workflows, workflow automation, and advanced analytics, to assess potential impact on Immunology R&D.
  • Contribute to data innovation and portfolio intelligence activities by identifying emerging technologies, data assets, and capability opportunities that may enhance R&D decision making.
  • Perform detailed analyses, develop high-quality materials, and communicate recommendations in technical and leadership forums to support decision making.
  • Other responsibilities in support of DDSAI objectives and broader R&D priorities, as required.


Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in engineering, mathematics, or a related scientific discipline with at least 4 years of relevant experience. (PhD is a plus.)
  • At least 4 years of relevant professional or academic experience in pharmaceutical R&D, biotechnology, healthcare, data science, digital health, AI, analytics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional and matrixed environments.
  • Experience translating scientific or business needs into practical data, analytics, digital health, or AI-enabled solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience assessing and applying emerging AI technologies, including generative AI and agentic systems, to address scientific, clinical, operational, or business challenges.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, organizational, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Familiarity with healthcare, clinical, imaging, digital health, biomarker, or real-world data.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree
  • Experience supporting Immunology or another therapeutic area research and development organization.
  • Experience delivering data science, AI, digital health, analytics, or workflow transformation initiatives.
  • Experience working with healthcare datasets, including clinical trial, real-world, imaging, biomarker, omics, or digital health data.
  • Experience with analytical and data science tools such as Python, R, SQL, cloud platforms, or related technologies.
  • Experience contributing to the design, implementation, integration, or scaling of machine learning, generative AI, agentic AI, workflow automation, or digital health solutions in a healthcare or life sciences environment.
  • Familiarity with data platforms, process improvement, workflow design, capability development, or technology enablement initiatives.


This position will be located at one of our campuses in either Spring House PA, Cambridge MA, Titusville NJ, Raritan NJ, or La Jolla/San Diego, CA (no fully remote option available). Travel for crossfunctional workshops, design sessions, and team meetings, etc., may be required.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $117,000 to $201,250. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis. Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance.
Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company's consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

Vacation - up to 120 hours per calendar year
