What is fixed income trading?

Fixed income trading involves the buying and selling of securities that pay fixed interest or dividends, such as government and corporate bonds. Traders in this field analyze economic trends, interest rates, and credit risk to make informed decisions about when to buy or sell these securities. The goal is to generate returns for investors while managing risks associated with interest rate fluctuations and issuer creditworthiness. Fixed income trading can take place in various markets, including over-the-counter and exchange-traded platforms.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Fixed Income Trading, and how can they be addressed?

Fixed Income Trading professionals often encounter challenges such as managing interest rate risk, staying updated with rapidly changing market conditions, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong analytical skills, real-time market monitoring, and close collaboration with research teams and compliance officers. Building effective communication with sales and portfolio management teams also helps in making informed trading decisions and adapting strategies as market dynamics evolve.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

In fixed income trading, experienced traders or portfolio managers can earn $10,000 or more monthly through commissions, bonuses, and profit sharing, often without a formal degree if they have strong market skills and certifications like the Series 7 or 63. Success in this field depends on expertise, risk management, and network, with some traders earning high income based on performance rather than formal education.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fixed Income Trader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fixed Income Trader, you need a strong understanding of financial markets, fixed income instruments, and quantitative analysis, often supported by a finance degree or relevant certifications such as CFA. Proficiency with trading platforms (e.g., Bloomberg Terminal), risk management systems, and financial modeling tools is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for making informed decisions and managing client relationships. These skills and qualifications are crucial for navigating complex markets, optimizing trade performance, and ensuring compliance in a highly regulated environment.

Job description

Location: Columbus, Ohio (in office)

Compensation Range: $72,000 โ€“ 78,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytically driven Fixed Income Sales Assistant to support our investment sales team and broader asset liability operations. This role plays a critical part in delivering high-quality fixed income offerings, including certificates of deposit and securities, through market research, trade support, and data management.

In this position, you will help facilitate the execution and delivery of tailored investment solutions by maintaining offering materials, analyzing market trends, supporting trade processing, and ensuring accurate documentation. Youโ€™ll collaborate closely with internal partners across sales, marketing, compliance, and operations, contributing to both client-facing initiatives and behind-the-scenes processes that drive successful outcomes.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with a strong foundation in fixed income markets who enjoys balancing analytical work, operational support, and cross-functional collaboration in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

What Youโ€™ll Do:

  • Update daily offering sheets for SimpliCD (Certificates of Deposit) and investment securities for internal and external distribution
  • Deliver tailored securities offerings using market research and analysis
  • Assist in executing securities transactions and ensure accurate settlement and documentation (with appropriate licensure)
  • Serve as backup for client support via phone or email when investment sales team members are unavailable
  • Maintain Salesforce records, investment databases, and documentation
  • Support Asset Liability Management operations, including rate administration and security safekeeping
  • Assist with proposal generation, performance modeling, and presentations
  • Collaborate with marketing and compliance teams on outreach and regulatory documentation
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned

What a Typical Day Looks Like:

Youโ€™ll balance market research, trade support, and internal collaboration with the investment team, while providing behind-the-scenes support that helps drive client success. While this role is primarily focused on operational and analytical tasks, you may occasionally assist clients over the phone as backup to the investment sales team. Itโ€™s ideal for someone who enjoys variety, being analytical, solving problems, and contributing to outcomes both independently and as part of a team.

What Weโ€™re Looking For:

  • Strong understanding of fixed income markets and institutional investment strategies
  • Proficiency in Bloomberg and Salesforce
  • Experience analyzing market data and supporting investment sales
  • Financial modeling or portfolio analysis experience
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and remotely with minimal supervision
  • Experience in B2B sales or client relationship management
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements related to securities transactions

Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in a business-related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 3 years in investments or financial services
  • Knowledge of fixed income instruments (CDs, bonds)
  • Series 7 and 63 preferred; support for licensure available
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel
