Job Title: Feed Yard Accountant

Department: Corporate Finance

Work Location: Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, LLC Corporate Office - Johnstown, CO
Reports To: Controller; Feed Yard GM as Assigned
FLSA Status: Salaried Exempt

Grade: 16C


Position Summary:

The Feed Yard Accountant is responsible for supporting the accounting and financial reporting functions of Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, LLC across multiple feed yard locations. This role partners closely with feed yard operations and corporate finance leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance with internal controls, and effective execution of accounting processes. The Feed Yard Accountant actively participates in day-to-day accounting activities, financial analysis, budgeting, and operational support while serving as a key resource to feed yard accounting teams and management.


Key Responsibilities:

Accounting & Financial Reporting

  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements, balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and supporting schedules for assigned feed yards.
  • Maintain and analyze general and subsidiary ledgers, including accounts receivable, inventories, depreciation, operating expenses, and insurance records.
  • Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information and supporting documentation.
  • Review and verify payments, disbursements, and financial transactions for accuracy and compliance.
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of month-end accounting processes and reporting requirements.
  • Provide financial data and reports to corporate finance leadership and feed yard management teams.

Operational & Feed Yard Support

  • Partner closely with feed yard management teams to support operational accounting and financial decision-making.
  • Travel to assigned feed yard locations to review accounting processes, audit compliance, and support operational accounting functions.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with company policies, procedures, and internal controls across assigned feed yards.
  • Educate and support feed yard management regarding account coding, financial reporting, and interpretation of financial data.
  • Support accounts payable, billing, inventory, and other accounting functions as needed.

Budgeting, Analysis & Cost Management

  • Participate in the development of capital and operating budgets for assigned locations.
  • Perform cost analyses, rate studies, and budget variance analyses to identify trends and operational impacts.
  • Analyze historical data, forecast operational needs, and assist management in controlling expenses.
  • Support management with actionable financial insights and recommendations.

Leadership & Team Support

  • In conjunction with feed yard general management, indirectly support and guide clerical accounting staff at assigned feed yards.
  • Assist with training, reviewing, and directing work to ensure consistency and accuracy in accounting processes.
  • Promote accountability, responsiveness, and strong communication across feed yard and corporate accounting teams.

Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Maintain financial security and confidentiality by following internal controls and company policies.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, Federal, State, and local financial requirements.
  • Support audit and compliance efforts through preparation of documentation and review of accounting records.
  • Assist in identifying process improvements and operational efficiencies within accounting functions.

Professional Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through continuing education, professional publications, and industry engagement.
  • Support process improvement initiatives and implementation of best practices within accounting and financial operations.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties and special projects assigned to support the success of Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, LLC.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA designation or progress toward certification preferred.
  • 1–3 years of accounting experience; public accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience in agriculture, feed yard operations, livestock production, or related industries preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 25–30% of the time; valid driver’s license & insurance required.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems required; experience with Microsoft 365 Business Central preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and other Microsoft Office applications required.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, relationship-oriented approach.
