POSITION PURPOSE

The Nexpera James River Plant located in Richmond, Virginia is seeking to fill the Maintenance Manager position to provide leadership and guidance to the maintenance team. The Maintenance Manager reports to the Plant Manager and leads an organization consisting of the following Nexpera resources: Warehouse Manager, Maintenance Planner, two (2) E&I Technicians, and five (5) multi-craft Mechanics. The on-site Rail Services contractor also reports to this position.

James River is a key facility within Nexpera, servicing the chemical, health care, and pharmaceutical industries. James River consumes molten sulfur to create fresh sulfuric acid and oleum (fuming sulfuric acid) of varying strengths. Sulfuric acid is a critical component in chemical synthesis and material processing for a wide array of end use applications. Our organization is highly committed to Process Safety, Environmental Stewardship, and Operational Excellence. The James River facility follows Process Safety Management guidelines.


PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES (but not limited to):


  • Responsible to sustain the Maintenance Organization’s and support the site’s stellar Safety, Health, and Environmental performance.

  • Member of the James River Site Leadership Team responsible for setting the strategic direction of the site, identifying and implementing key improvements in support of site performance and business objectives.
  • Drive maintenance best practices and continuous improvement efforts to achieve increased efficiency, consistency, and quality. The manager will lead the Maintenance Work Management Process, with accountability for achieving Maintenance Best Practices metrics in support of overall site operational performance.
  • Responsible for day-to-day activities of the James River Maintenance staff. Facilitate the development of maintenance work schedules and allocation of team members to complete schedules. Possess knowledge of equipment, machines, and worker capabilities to meet identified schedules and timelines.
  • Responsible and accountable for maintenance spending and cost management including contract services, maintenance labor, maintenance materials, and warehousing.
  • Responsible and accountable for bi-annual TAR (turnaround) activities including planning, scheduling, budgeting, staffing, procurement, kitting, execution and continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for capital budgeting, planning, and execution for small plant capital projects. Support Project Engineering with the construction execution of large capital projects.
  • Site Contract Administrator for all contractors/sub-contractors, ensuring contractor safety, quality, and compliance with contract terms and scopes of work. Responsible for managing contractual agreements with site tenants, ensuring contractual compliance, accurate cost allocation, and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Alternate Facility Security Officer (FSO) - Accountable and responsible for Site Security plan, maintaining compliance with the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA). Must be able to attain a TWIC card.
  • Work with Plant Mechanical Integrity / Quality Assurance Engineer to support reliability programs.
  • Lead specific elements of the site Process Safety Management program.
  • Lead and participate in incident investigations and Root Cause Failure Analyses.
  • Perform First Line supervisor duties for maintenance organization, such as timecard approval, personnel management and development, and scheduling oversight.
  • Learn key aspects of Operations Manager role. Serve as back-up to Operations Manager as needed for vacation and/or disability coverage.


QUALIFICATIONS:

In order to be qualified for this role, the following is required:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (preferably in Engineering) OR high school diploma and 10+ years of experience working in chemical or petrochemical operations in maintenance and/or operations .
  • Experience:
    • 3+ years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing facility.
    • Experience in operation following PSM guidelines is preferred.
    • Experience in job roles requiring HazWoper qualification and HazMat training is preferred.
    • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Demonstrated strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
    • Strong technical maintenance background with effective Planning and Coordination skills
    • Strong commitment to standards-based decision making, work execution consistent with established procedures where existing, and creation of temporary procedures where appropriate.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
    • Working Knowledge of Mechanical Integrity and Quality Assurance systems.
    • Root Cause investigation and incident investigation experience required.
    • ERP System experience and proficiency (SAP)
    • Turna round experience and/or large project management experience
    • TAR Coordination/leadership experience
    • Business software (Excel, PowerPoint, Google sheets etc.)
    • 3+ years maintenance/manufacturing experience in a chemical process
    • Ability to support 24x7 Operations (as needed – On Call)
    • Ability to support 24x7 Shutdown/Startup events
    • Able to travel up to 10% per year
  • Certifications:
    • Must possess a current and valid Driver’s license.
    • Must be able to obtain andmaintaina TWIC card.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Willing and able to work in a High Hazard environment; outdoors, indoors, elevated heights and confined spaces.
  • Ability to work for prolonged periods in extremes of hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to work around hazardous materials such as sulfuric acid and molten sulfur.
  • Ability to wear required PPE (including FR clothing, respirators, and fall protection equipment).
  • Frequent stooping, bending, climbing, reaching and carrying, use of hand tools (shovels, brooms, sledgehammers, picks) and moving heavy objects.
  • Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, and high-lifts, and to enter and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to respond to emergency call-outs as required by site operations.
  • Typical Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week.
  • Occasional travel to other locations may be required.
