How much do fit modeling jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for fit modeling in California is $39.81, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $30.82 and $42.93 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is fit modeling?

Fit modeling is a type of modeling where individuals are hired to try on clothing samples to help fashion designers and manufacturers assess the fit, drape, and appearance of garments before mass production. Fit models provide feedback about the comfort and movement of the clothing, ensuring that it meets the brand’s sizing and quality standards. They are chosen to match specific body measurements that represent the brand’s target customer, rather than for runway or photographic work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fit model?

To thrive as a Fit Model, you need precise body measurements that align with industry sample sizes, good posture, and the ability to maintain consistent physical dimensions. Familiarity with garment construction and the ability to provide detailed feedback on fit and comfort are often required, and some employers may prefer previous modeling experience. Strong communication, professionalism, and the ability to collaborate effectively with designers and technical teams are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate product development and help brands create clothing that fits their target customers effectively.

What are some common challenges fit models face when working with design and production teams?

Fit models often encounter challenges such as providing consistent feedback on garment comfort, fit, and movement while balancing the expectations of designers and technical teams. They need to clearly communicate subtle issues with samples, such as tightness or restriction, which may not always be visible but are crucial for the final product. Additionally, fit models must maintain specific body measurements and be adaptable to frequent schedule changes and fast-paced environments, especially during seasonal product launches.

What is the difference between Fit Modeling vs Pattern Making?

AspectFit ModelingPattern Making
Primary RoleEvaluates garment fit on models to ensure proper sizing and comfortDesigns and creates patterns used to cut fabric for garments
Required SkillsBody measurements, fitting techniques, understanding of fabric behaviorDrafting, sewing, pattern drafting, and technical skills
Work EnvironmentFashion studios, apparel companies, fitting roomsDesign studios, manufacturing facilities, pattern departments
Industry UsageCommon in apparel and fashion brands during sample developmentEssential in apparel production, pattern development, and sample creation

While both Fit Modeling and Pattern Making are vital in the apparel industry, Fit Modeling focuses on evaluating how garments fit on models, ensuring sizing and comfort, whereas Pattern Making involves designing and creating the patterns used to cut fabric. Both roles require knowledge of garment construction, but they serve different stages in the clothing development process.

How do you become a fit model?

To become a fit model, individuals typically need to have a consistent, accurate body measurement that matches the brand's target size, often requiring a specific height and body shape. Experience in modeling or sewing can be helpful, and maintaining a professional attitude and availability for fittings are important. Some fit models are represented by agencies or work directly with clothing brands and manufacturers.

Job description

About The Role

You will be part of Zipline's Systems Modeling Team, which develops physics-based models used to architect, optimize, and validate Zipline's aircraft hardware and operational systems. Battery performance, charging behavior, and lifetime directly affect how reliably the fleet can serve customers.

You will own end-to-end battery modeling from cell electrochemistry through pack electro-thermal behavior and fleet software integration. Your work will guide cell selection, hardware operating limits, charging decisions, and the validated energy models used in fleet optimization.

What You'll Do
  • Own cell-level models across electrochemical and equivalent-circuit fidelities to evaluate performance, fast charging capability, degradation, and lifetime.
  • Define Zipline's cell electrochemistry roadmap and lead cell benchmarking and selection with internal teams and cell vendors.
  • Design and analyze characterization and validation campaigns, including EIS, HPPC, OCV, and cycle and calendar aging studies.
  • Develop pack-level electro-thermal models that predict electrical and thermal non-uniformity during high-power operation and charging.
  • Build state-estimation and controls-oriented algorithms for SOC, SOH, SOE, SOP, and aging-aware charging-current limits.
  • Integrate validated battery and energy models into simulation and operational software that informs fleet charging, turnaround, battery-health, and aircraft-energy decisions.
What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years of professional battery-modeling experience, or a PhD plus 2 years, with a focus on electrochemical modeling.
  • Deep knowledge of cell electrochemistry, heat transfer, thermodynamics, electrical circuits, numerical methods, and optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with SPM, SPMe, P2D, equivalent-circuit models, and battery degradation mechanisms.
  • Experience planning, running, or interpreting battery characterization and validation testing, including EIS, HPPC, OCV, and aging studies.
  • Proficiency in at least one of MATLAB, Python, Julia, C++, or Rust.
  • Ability to communicate complex model behavior and datasets clearly and work closely with mechanical, electrical, test, and systems-modeling engineers.
  • Advanced degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical engineering, physics, computational science, or a related field is preferred; familiarity with PyBaMM is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Computational Science, or related field.
  • Familiarity with PyBaMM or similar electrochemical battery modeling frameworks.
  • Experience with battery degradation and lifetime modeling.
  • Experience developing battery state estimation algorithms.
What Else You Need to Know

The starting cash range for this role is $130,000 - $165,000. Please note that this is a target, starting cash range for a candidate who meets the minimum qualifications for this role. The final cash pay for this role will depend on a variety of factors, including a specific candidate's experience, qualifications, skills, working location, and projected impact. The total compensation package for this role may also include: equity compensation; discretionary annual or performance bonuses; sales incentives; benefits such as medical, dental and vision insurance; paid time off; and more.
