Job description

Job Title: Cytogenetic Technologist
Summary:
Acts as a cytogenetic specialist in providing medical technologist services in processing patient specimens, performing tissue culturing on specimens, performing quality control testing, troubleshooting equipment and technical laboratory process problems, prepare reagent aliquots, preparing solutions, performing instrument maintenance, performing chromosome analysis and FISH analysis on clinical specimens, and preparing in-house and referral patient data and study data for reporting. Produces accurate test results for all patients. Provides technical direction to other employees, as directed. Develops and leads projects, as directed. Cross-training in molecular assay.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Follows laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, and
    maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Perform high complexity testing as directed by technical/general supervisor: Chromosome analysis,
    and FISH analysis.
  • Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities,
    instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follows the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within
    the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either
    must correct the problems or immediately notify the technical/general supervisor.
  • Performs competencies as identified through the departmental competency program
  • Writes procedure manuals and alters current practices and documents. May review the work of
    subordinates to ensure compliance with CLIA and CAP personnel requirements, as directed.
  • Designs and performs validation of new assay or continuous validation as directed by
    technical/general supervisor.
  • Attends continuing education programs as scheduled.
  • Stocks supplies and equipment to ensure uninterrupted service.
  • Performs as a back-up to staff absences and vacancies, as necessary.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities:
  • Performs, as directed, safety compliance and uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as
    needed.
  • Participates in Quality Assessment (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI) programs, as directed.
  • Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission, CAP, CLIA, and all other Federal, State and
    Regulatory Agencies.
  • Foster a positive team environment and assist coworkers as required
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures
