How much do fish pathologist jobs pay per year?
What is a fish pathologist?
A Fish Pathologist is a specialized scientist who studies diseases in fish and other aquatic organisms. They diagnose, prevent, and treat infections caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and environmental factors. Fish Pathologists work in aquaculture, wildlife conservation, research, and regulatory agencies to ensure fish health and food safety. Their role helps maintain sustainable fisheries and protect aquatic ecosystems.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of a fish pathologist?
As a Fish Pathologist, your typical day might involve examining fish samples to identify diseases, running laboratory tests, and analyzing data to determine causes of illness or mortality. You may work closely with aquaculture teams, researchers, or government agencies to develop health management strategies and deliver recommendations for disease prevention. Collaboration with veterinarians, biologists, and aquatic facility staff is common, as well as reporting on findings and staying up-to-date with emerging diseases. The role often involves both laboratory and fieldwork, offering variety and hands-on experience.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the fish pathologist position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Fish Pathologist, you need a background in aquatic biology, microbiology, or veterinary science, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with laboratory diagnostic tools, microscopy, PCR testing, and fish health monitoring systems is important. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart. These abilities are critical for accurately diagnosing fish diseases, communicating findings, and supporting fish health in aquaculture or research settings.

Job description
The Department of Pathology offers a one-year fellowship program in hematopathology. The purpose of this fellowship is to provide advanced training in hematopathology using state of the art supportive diagnostic techniques, in a broad spectrum of pediatric and adult morphologic hematopathology, including disorders of the bone marrow, peripheral blood, lymph node and other solid tissues, and coagulation. The fellow will gain experience in laboratory management in hematology, flow cytometry, and molecular diagnostics laboratories and in consulting on hematology patients.
Clinical material includes both UCLA patient cases as well as hematopathology consult cases. Numerous teaching conferences supplement our clinical workload. Fellows will be exposed to a full range of techniques: flow cytometry, DNA content analysis, immunoperoxidase procedures, FISH, conventional karyotyping, and other molecular/genetic diagnostic studies; the fellow will become proficient with the integration of specialized testing into diagnostic decision-making. Research opportunities in basic and clinical problems in hematopathology are available. A Department of Pathology endowed training grant fund is available to support translational research projects and educational travel.
