Day to day as a Bus Driver/Safety Coordinator

As a Full-Time Bus Driver/Safety Coordinator at the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, you will play a vital role in the Head Start program by directly supervising the transportation of children to and from school. Under the guidance of the Head Start Health/Safety Nutrition Advocate, your responsibilities will include ensuring adherence to public safety rules and internal procedures while maintaining a safe and sanitary environment for the children. You will assist in their care and education, implementing Head Start Performance Standards and Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Policies.

Additionally, your role involves conducting safety inspections and training staff on essential safety policies and procedures, ensuring a comprehensive approach to health and safety in accordance with Indian Health Services Tribal Health and Safety Code and Child and Adult Care Food Program guidelines. This position not only prioritizes student safety and well-being but also contributes to a nurturing learning environment.

What you need to be successful

To thrive as a Full-Time Bus Driver/Safety Coordinator at the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, a comprehensive set of skills and qualifications is essential. Candidates must hold a high school diploma or equivalent and be at least 21 years of age to qualify for the RSIC Vehicle Insurance Program. A valid State of Nevada Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and "S" endorsements is required, along with a good driving record verified through a DMV printout. Successful candidates must understand and implement policies, regulations, and safety guidelines while having experience in writing and updating such documents.

Physical stamina is essential, as the role necessitates standing, walking, sitting, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal information are crucial. Finally, candidates should exhibit a sensitivity to diverse cultures and the needs of the Native American community, along with the ability to pass annual health screenings and obtain necessary certifications.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age at time of hire and be eligible for participation in the RSIC Vehicle Insurance Program.
  • Must possess a valid State of Nevada Commercial Driverโ€™s License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement and โ€œSโ€ endorsement
  • Have a DMV print out with a good driving record submitted prior to date of hire.
  • Must understand policies, regulations and established safety guidelines. Must have experience writing and updating policies.
  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; regularly required to stand, walk and sit for periods of time
  • communicate and hear both in person and by telephone; also, regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl climb or balance and lift to 50 pounds.
  • Able to adhere to strict confidentiality policies of personal information about children, families and staff.
  • Able to work with people from diverse cultures ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds with knowledge of Tribal community and sensitivity to Native American needs.
  • Must satisfactorily pass an annual physical examination and TB screening
  • Must possess and maintain infant, child and adult CPR certification, First Aid certification and a Food Handlerโ€™s Certification within three (3) months from date of hire and each year thereafter.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening and background checks
