The Role:
The Department of Sociology in the College of the Sciences at Central Washington University (Ellensburg, WA) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning September 16, 2027.
We seek a teacher-scholar with a strong commitment to undergraduate education in a liberal arts setting and a specialization in Native Peoples and Nations (including Native American, American Indian, Alaska Native, First Nations, and related communities). The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in one or more areas central to Native and Indigenous sociology or social sciences, including but not limited to: Tribal sovereignty and governance; settler colonialism and its contemporary manifestations; Indigenous data sovereignty and epistemological justice; identity, representation, and nationhood; Indigenous knowledge systems and sociological theory; health inequities and structural determinants of Native well-being; systemic crises affecting Native communities (e.g., Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives/MMIR); and Native-led social movements, including treaty rights advocacy, environmental justice, and cultural resurgence.
Preference will be given to candidates whose work focuses on Native Peoples and Nations in the Pacific Northwest region.
Responsibilities include teaching general education and upper-division sociology courses, maintaining an active research agenda, advising students, supervising internships, and contributing service to the department, university, and community. This position may also provide the opportunity to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching and mentorship, including courses in the American Indian Studies program and related programs such as Cultural & Environmental Resource Management . Faculty will integrate CWU's vision, mission, and values and create a learning environment that fosters student success and institut ional excellence.
Minimum Qualifications

- A PhD in sociology or closely related social science field (ABD candidates may be considered; however, the PhD must be completed before start date)
- Demonstrated academic background and expertise in Native Peopls and nations (including Native American, American Indian, Alaska native, First Nations, and related communities)
- Demonstrated ability - or willingness - to teach a wide range of sociology courses at all levels and modalities
- Possess superior teaching abilities
- Ability to meet or exceed tenure requirements
- Teaching, research, services or other experience that has prepared the candidate to contribute to CWU's commitment to the engagement of students from a variety of backgrounds

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Annual Salary : $65,136 - $68,000, based on a full-time nine-month appointment.
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
Appointment: Full-Time, Tenure-Track, 9 Month Appointment. Additional Summer teaching may be available. Central Washington University is on the quarter system with appointments from mid-September through mid-June.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
