First Job information

What is a first job?

First jobs are typically entry-level positions that individuals take early in their careers, often as their initial work experience. These roles can range from part-time or temporary jobs to internships and apprenticeships in various industries. First jobs help people develop basic workplace skills, build their resumes, and gain valuable insights into their career interests. They can also provide a stepping stone to more advanced positions as individuals gain confidence and experience. Many people use their first job as an opportunity to learn about professional expectations, teamwork, and time management.

What are some common challenges people face in their first job and how can they overcome them?

Starting your first job can come with challenges such as adapting to a professional environment, managing time effectively, and learning workplace expectations. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at first, but seeking feedback, asking questions, and observing experienced colleagues can help you adjust more smoothly. Building strong communication skills and being proactive in your responsibilities will also support your growth. Remember, most employers appreciate a willingness to learn and a positive attitude as you develop your skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in your first job, and why are they important?

To thrive in your first job, you generally need basic organizational skills, reliability, and a willingness to learn, along with any specific educational or training requirements for the position. Familiarity with common office software, point-of-sale systems, or role-specific tools may also be necessary. Strong communication, teamwork, and a positive attitude help new employees stand out and adapt quickly. These qualities are crucial for building a solid professional reputation, meeting expectations, and setting the foundation for future career growth.

What is the best job to get as a first job?

The best first job often depends on individual interests and goals, but entry-level positions such as retail associate, food service worker, or administrative assistant are common starting points. These roles typically require minimal experience, help develop basic skills like communication and time management, and may offer flexible schedules. Gaining experience in these roles can also provide a foundation for future career advancement.

Travelling Commercial Superintendent

FIRST ONSITE

Mississauga, ON

CA$29 - CA$34/hr

Contractor

Posted 9 days ago

Job description

Are you a hands-on leader who knows how to keep people organized, work moving, and details from falling through the cracks? First Onsite is hiring several Commercial Superintendents to join our Travelling team for major projects in Saskatchewan.

These are 12-month temporary contracts supporting large-scale construction and restoration work across three First Nations communities. You'll work alongside a full project team and be responsible for leading field staff, coordinating contractors and sub-trades, keeping work on track, and making sure safety documentation, reporting and timesheets are completed accurately.

Construction or restoration experience is a strong asset, but it isn't the only background we're looking for. If you've successfully led teams in another fast-paced, hands-on environment and are organized, comfortable with technology and paperwork, and confident keeping people accountable, we'd like to hear from you.

This is a rotational travelling role, currently anticipated to be approximately 3-4 weeks on site followed by 7-10 days at home, working a 6-day work week while on assignment. Required travel and accommodations are provided by First Onsite. This is a current opening offering $29-$34/hour, based on experience, plus a daily per diem.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A COMMERCIAL SUPERINTENDENT

As a Commercial Superintendent, you're the person helping keep the day-to-day work on site moving. You'll provide direction to field staff, contractors and sub-trades, coordinate daily activities, monitor progress and step in when priorities change or challenges come up.

A big part of this job is also what happens behind the scenes. You'll stay on top of safety documentation, reporting, timesheets and other required paperwork, while making sure work is being completed safely, efficiently and to the expected standard.

You'll work closely with the Commercial Operations Supervisor, Project Managers, Safety Advisors, Project Coordinators and other members of the project team. You'll need to communicate well, handle conflict professionally, solve problems without needing every step laid out for you, and be willing to get hands-on when the job requires it.

Qualifications
  • Experience leading or coordinating small teams in construction, restoration, trades, field operations or another fast-paced, hands-on environment
  • Construction, restoration, mitigation or disaster-response experience is a strong asset, with compensation reflective of relevant experience
  • Comfortable directing the work of field staff, contractors and sub-trades, including setting expectations, following up and addressing issues when needed
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to manage documentation, safety paperwork, reporting and timesheets
  • Comfortable using a smartphone, web-based applications and technology to upload, download and record information
  • Strong communication, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
  • Safety-focused and comfortable leading by example in an active job-site environment
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's licence and strong driving record
  • Able to meet the physical requirements of the role, including lifting up to 50 lbs and wearing required PPE and respiratory protection
  • Comfortable working extended hours, a 6-day work week and rotational assignments in remote communities
  • Able to travel extensively and remain away from home for extended periods
