First Assistant Accountant information

What is a first assistant accountant?

First Assistant Accountants are key financial professionals who support the lead accountant or financial controller in managing a company's accounts. Their duties often include preparing financial statements, processing invoices, reconciling bank statements, and assisting with audits. They play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, helping organizations comply with regulations and make informed business decisions. Typically, they report to the head accountant and may supervise junior staff, making organizational and communication skills essential. This position is common in industries such as film production, where they help manage production budgets and expenses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a first assistant accountant?

To thrive as a First Assistant Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and often a relevant degree or professional qualification such as ACCA or CIMA. Familiarity with accounting software (like QuickBooks or SAP), spreadsheet tools, and financial management systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial records, efficient workflow, and reliable support for senior accountants or finance managers.

What are some typical challenges faced by a first assistant accountant when preparing for audits, and how can these be managed?

First Assistant Accountants often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, ensuring accuracy in reconciliations, and gathering complete documentation during audit preparation. Proactively maintaining well-organized records throughout the year and regularly reconciling accounts can help streamline the process. Effective communication with other departments and strong time management skills are essential to address last-minute requests from auditors and minimize errors. Collaborating closely with senior accountants and auditors also ensures that any discrepancies are resolved quickly.

What is the difference between First Assistant Accountant vs Junior Accountant?

AspectFirst Assistant AccountantJunior Accountant

Employer & Industry UsageUsed in corporate finance, accounting firms, large organizationsCommon in small businesses, entry-level roles in various industries

The First Assistant Accountant typically has more experience and handles more complex accounting tasks compared to a Junior Accountant. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds, the First Assistant Accountant often supports senior staff and manages detailed financial activities, whereas the Junior Accountant focuses on basic bookkeeping and data entry. Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right position based on their experience level and career goals.

How to get the first assistant accountant job with no experience?

First Assistant Accountants typically need some accounting knowledge, so gaining relevant education such as a diploma or certificate in accounting is helpful. Entry-level candidates can improve their chances by developing skills in accounting software like QuickBooks or Excel, and seeking internships or volunteer opportunities to build practical experience. Demonstrating attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a willingness to learn can also increase employability for those with no prior experience.

About Jerritt Canyon

The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972, and the first gold production from the property occurred in 1981. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining-friendly state of Nevada. First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. In May 2023, operations were suspended to prioritize exploration and technical studies. Jerritt Canyon is now entering a new phase of evaluation and planning, requiring substantial technical support to advance the work necessary for a potential future restart of operations.

The Opportunity

Jerritt Canyon is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our growing team. This role is responsible for supporting key accounting and financial reporting functions, including month-end and year-end close activities, account reconciliations, cost accounting, financial analysis, and audit support. The Senior Accountant will work closely with site leadership and corporate finance teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain compliance with IFRS, Company policies, and regulatory requirements, and support the continued growth and success of the operation.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and support the company's accounting and financial reporting functions, including cost accounting activities.
  • Maintain accounting records, general ledger accounts, and supporting documentation in accordance with IFRS, GAAP, and Company policies.
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze account reconciliations, investigate variances, and proactively resolve discrepancies.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements and management reporting packages.
  • Support internal and external audits by coordinating schedules, documentation, and audit requests.
  • Assist with compliance related to federal, state, local, payroll, sales/use, and other applicable taxes.
  • Perform cost accounting activities, including cost variance analysis, inventory valuation, and operational cost reporting.
  • Support material inventory controls, including validation of inventory transactions and periodic inventory counts.
  • Review purchasing and procurement transactions to ensure proper accounting treatment and compliance with Company policies.
  • Maintain fixed asset records, including capital project tracking (CIP), depreciation, asset additions, disposals, and annual physical inventories.
  • Assist with internal control compliance, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, treasury, and other accounting functions as needed to ensure business continuity and operational success.
  • Prepare and distribute financial reports, schedules, and supporting analyses for management and corporate reporting.
  • Build strong working relationships across operations, maintenance, supply chain, technical services, and corporate finance teams.
  • Contribute ideas and actions toward process improvements that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and financial controls.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

The above responsibilities are representative and may not include all assigned duties.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience required.
  • CPA, CMA, or CPA-track strongly preferred.
  • Experience with financial reporting, month-end close, account reconciliations, and internal controls required.
  • Experience with cost accounting, inventory accounting, fixed assets, or capital project accounting preferred.
  • Mining, manufacturing, industrial, or other heavy industry experience preferred.
