Job Title: Quality Inspector

Job Description

The Quality Inspector performs detailed dimensional inspections on machined components to ensure they meet strict engineering and quality standards. This role focuses on first article, in-process, and final inspections in a high-precision machine shop, using advanced measurement tools and CMM technology. The inspector collaborates closely with machinists and programmers to prevent defects, supports a right-first-time culture, and maintains accurate documentation and calibration control in alignment with established quality systems.

Responsibilities

• Perform first article, in-process, and final inspections on machined components to verify conformance to engineering specifications and customer requirements.
• Use a variety of inspection tools, including coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, indicators, and optical comparators to conduct precise dimensional inspections.
• Operate and interpret results from CMMs, such as ZEISS Calypso or similar programs, to measure complex geometries and tight tolerances.
• Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, including tight tolerances and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), to determine inspection requirements and acceptance criteria.
• Document inspection results clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner to support traceability and quality records.
• Work closely with machinists and programmers to identify potential issues early, provide feedback, and support a right-first-time mindset throughout the production process.
• Maintain control and organization of inspection tools, gauges, and measurement devices, ensuring all equipment remains in proper calibration status.
• Support the generation of First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) and other inspection reports as needed, in accordance with applicable standards.
• Apply strong dimensional inspection techniques to verify part features, dimensions, and tolerances in a CNC and machine shop environment.
• Follow established quality procedures and contribute to continuous improvement of inspection processes and documentation.
• Start work at 5:00 AM and adhere to the assigned schedule, which may include either four 10-hour shifts or five standard shifts per week.
• Work reliably and independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 4 years of experience in precision inspection within a CNC or machine shop environment.
• Strong grasp of dimensional inspection techniques and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
• Proficiency using hand inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, indicators, and gauges.
• Experience using optical comparators for detailed dimensional verification.
• Ability to operate and understand coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), including ZEISS Calypso or similar programs.
• Proficient in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings with tight tolerances.
• Strong documentation skills with the ability to record inspection results clearly and accurately.
• Detail-oriented mindset with a high level of accuracy in measurements and recordkeeping.
• Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work effectively with minimal supervision.
• Comfort working in a high-precision, high-production machine shop environment.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality principles and practices.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with AS9102 First Article Inspection Reports.
• Familiarity with AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality management systems.
• Exposure to aerospace or medical machining environments.
• Experience generating FAIRs and other formal inspection reports.
• Experience working with high-precision, large production machining operations.
• Comfort using ZEISS Calypso or similar CMM software for complex dimensional inspections.

Work Environment

The role is based in a large, high-precision machine shop focused on high-volume production of machined components. You will work closely with machinists and programmers on the shop floor, using advanced inspection technologies including CMMs (such as ZEISS Calypso), micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, indicators, gauges, and optical comparators. The facility supports complex, tight-tolerance work and operates on an early schedule with a 5:00 AM start time, offering either four 10-hour shifts or a traditional five-day schedule, depending on operational needs. The environment emphasizes quality, collaboration, and consistent production flow, with a strong connection between management and operators and a focus on maintaining a smooth workload from quarter to quarter.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portland, OR.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $35.00/hr.
