What does a firmware quality engineer do?

A Firmware Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the firmware—software programmed into hardware devices—meets quality standards before it reaches customers. They design and execute tests, identify bugs, and work closely with development teams to resolve issues. Their work involves creating test plans, automating tests, and verifying that firmware performs reliably and efficiently on targeted hardware. By thoroughly testing embedded software, they help prevent defects and ensure a smooth user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firmware quality engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Firmware Quality Engineer, you typically need a strong background in embedded systems, programming languages like C/C++, and experience with hardware-software integration—usually supported by a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with testing frameworks, version control systems (such as Git), debugging tools, and sometimes certifications in software quality or ISTQB are highly valuable. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure the reliability, functionality, and safety of firmware in complex electronic products.

What are some common challenges firmware quality engineers face when working with cross-functional teams?

Firmware Quality Engineers often collaborate with hardware engineers, software developers, and product managers, which can present communication and coordination challenges. Aligning testing timelines with rapidly evolving firmware updates and hardware changes requires adaptability and proactive planning. It's important to clearly document testing procedures and findings to ensure all stakeholders are informed, and to regularly participate in team meetings for effective issue resolution. These collaborative efforts help maintain product quality and foster a supportive work environment.

What is the difference between Firmware Quality Engineer vs Firmware Test Engineer?

AspectFirmware Quality EngineerFirmware Test Engineer
Primary FocusEnsuring overall firmware quality, process improvement, defect preventionExecuting tests, identifying bugs, validating firmware functionality
ResponsibilitiesQuality assurance strategies, process audits, defect analysisTest case development, manual/automated testing, bug reporting
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of quality standards (ISO, CMMI), testing tools, firmware developmentTesting tools, scripting, firmware debugging skills
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with development, QA teams, often in manufacturing or embedded systemsPrimarily in testing labs, embedded systems environments

Firmware Quality Engineers focus on the overall quality processes and defect prevention, while Firmware Test Engineers concentrate on executing tests and identifying bugs. Both roles require related skills and often work closely in firmware development projects, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

Job description

Firmware QA Engineer (Embedded Test Engineer)

Westlake Village, CA
100% Onsite
$85,000 range + Benefits

We're partnering with an innovative technology company developing connected embedded devices used in highly regulated industries. They're looking for a hands-on Firmware QA Engineer who enjoys working directly with hardware, validating firmware releases, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring products perform flawlessly before reaching customers.

If you prefer real-world hardware testing over building automated test frameworks, this is an excellent opportunity to make a direct impact on product quality.

What You'll Do
  • Validate firmware releases on embedded hardware against defined requirements
  • Execute manual regression testing across device functionality, including:
    • Power management
    • Sensors
    • Charging
    • Connectivity
    • Fault recovery
  • Perform ship testing and pre-deployment verification on production devices
  • Configure hardware and verify release readiness before customer deployment
  • Execute smoke, regression, and targeted firmware test suites
  • Validate GPS performance, including:
    • Time to first fix
    • Signal accuracy
    • Signal recovery
    • Low-signal scenarios
  • Reproduce firmware issues using logs, serial interfaces, and lab tools
  • Partner closely with firmware and hardware engineers to validate expected behavior and edge cases
  • Verify connectivity, pairing, and firmware stability
  • Assist in troubleshooting customer-reported issues by gathering logs and helping isolate root causes
  • Write light Python or shell scripts to streamline repetitive testing tasks (automation is a plus but not the primary focus)
  • Communicate testing results, quality risks, and release readiness to cross-functional teams

What We're Looking For
  • Experience testing embedded firmware on physical hardware
  • Background validating connected devices, IoT products, or distributed systems
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Test planning
    • Manual regression testing
    • Risk-based testing
    • Production release validation
  • Experience identifying quality risks and communicating findings clearly
  • Comfortable collaborating with engineering, product, operations, and support teams
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Self-motivated with a practical, hands-on approach
Nice to Have
  • Experience validating OTA firmware updates
  • GPS testing experience and interpreting GPS logs
  • Python, Bash, or Shell scripting
  • Experience working in regulated industries such as:
    • Medical Devices
    • Healthcare
    • Aerospace
    • Manufacturing
    • OEM environments
