What is a Firmware AI engineer?

Firmware AI engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize firmware—low-level software that controls hardware devices—by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. They work on embedding AI algorithms directly into hardware systems, enabling smart devices to process data and make decisions locally, often with limited computing resources. Their role bridges the gap between hardware engineering and software development, ensuring efficient and reliable AI functionality in embedded systems such as IoT devices, robotics, and consumer electronics.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Firmware AI engineer?

To thrive as a Firmware AI Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, firmware development (C/C++), and AI concepts, often supported by a degree in computer engineering or related fields. Familiarity with microcontroller platforms, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow Lite or Edge AI SDKs is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective cross-functional communication set top candidates apart. These skills are crucial for integrating AI algorithms into embedded devices efficiently and ensuring robust, reliable performance.

How does a Firmware AI engineer typically collaborate with hardware and software teams during the development process?

Firmware AI engineers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between hardware and software teams. They work closely with hardware engineers to ensure AI algorithms are optimized for the device's constraints and performance requirements. Simultaneously, they collaborate with software developers to integrate AI models into embedded systems, ensuring smooth communication between firmware, operating systems, and application layers. Regular cross-functional meetings and design reviews are common, fostering a collaborative environment that helps resolve integration challenges quickly.

Job description

@HYVE Solutions, missions to help customers, business partners, and employees achieve success through shared goals, strategies, resources and technology solutions.

Platform management firmware is essential to the reliability, serviceability, and manageability of hyperscale AI servers. This Principal-level role owns BMC firmware architecture and development-built on OpenBMC-for Hyve's next-generation AI and compute server platforms, spanning manageability, telemetry, power/thermal control, security, and manufacturing enablement in close partnership with hardware and Hyperscaler customers.

Core Responsibilities
  • BMC firmware architecture. Define and own the OpenBMC-based firmware architecture for AI/GPU server platforms, including manageability stack, Redfish interfaces, IPMI, and platform telemetry.
  • Platform control and monitoring. Develop and integrate power, thermal, fan-control, and sensor monitoring firmware in close collaboration with power delivery and thermal teams.
  • Security and reliability. Implement secure boot, firmware update/recovery, RoT integration, and robust error handling to meet hyperscaler security and reliability requirements.
  • Bring-up and debug. Lead firmware bring-up across EVT/DVT/PVT, debug at board and system level, and drive root-cause analysis and permanent fixes across firmware, hardware, and system-integration domains.
  • Manufacturing and deployment enablement. Deliver firmware tooling and features for factory provisioning, diagnostics, and fleet deployment, and support field issue resolution at scale.
  • Technical leadership. Set firmware development methodology, review code, and mentor engineers; represent firmware architecture to customers and internal executives.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: 10+ years of embedded/firmware development experience, including significant BMC/platform management firmware work and hands-on OpenBMC development. Proven delivery of server-class firmware into production; hyperscale experience preferred.
  • Technical expertise: Strong C/C++ and embedded Linux skills; deep knowledge of OpenBMC, Redfish, IPMI, I2C/I3C, PMBus, SPI, and platform management interfaces; experience with secure boot, firmware update, and RoT.
  • Systems knowledge: Solid understanding of server hardware, power/thermal control loops, and the interaction of firmware with BIOS, hardware, and manufacturing flows.
  • Communication: Able to lead cross-functional debug, drive architecture decisions, and communicate effectively with hardware teams, customers, and executives.

Compensation: $214,000 to $290,000
