What does a fireplace installer do?

A Fireplace Installer is responsible for assembling, installing, and maintaining fireplaces, wood stoves, and other heating appliances in homes and businesses. They ensure proper ventilation, safety compliance, and efficient operation by following manufacturer instructions and local building codes. Installers may also work with masonry, gas lines, and electrical components to complete installations safely. Their job includes inspecting existing fireplaces, troubleshooting issues, and making necessary repairs or upgrades. Proper installation helps improve energy efficiency and reduces fire hazards.

What does a typical workday look like for a fireplace installer?

A typical day for a Fireplace Installer involves traveling to clients’ homes or construction sites to assess installation areas, preparing workspaces, and ensuring all measurements and clearances comply with building codes. Installers handle the assembly and secure placement of fireplaces, connect gas or electrical lines if needed, and create safe venting pathways. The role often requires coordination with builders, electricians, and clients to ensure a seamless project from start to finish. Challenges can include adapting to different site conditions and addressing unexpected obstacles while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality. Most installers enjoy the hands-on nature of the role and the satisfaction of delivering a finished product that becomes the centerpiece of a room.

Do you need a license to install fireplaces?

Fireplace installers typically need a license or certification, which varies by state or local regulations. Licensing ensures proper installation, safety standards, and compliance with building codes, and may require completing training or apprenticeships. It is important to check specific regional requirements before performing installations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the fireplace installer position, and why are they important?

Success as a Fireplace Installer requires strong knowledge of construction practices, proficiency in reading blueprints, and expertise in safely installing wood, gas, or electric fireplaces, usually backed by a high school diploma and on-the-job training. Familiarity with power tools, venting systems, and relevant safety certifications such as NFI (National Fireplace Institute) certification is often expected. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and customer service skills help installers address unique installation challenges and build positive client relationships. These abilities ensure installations comply with safety regulations, function properly, and lead to high customer satisfaction.

How do you become a fireplace installer?

To become a fireplace installer, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by on-the-job training or an apprenticeship to gain hands-on experience. Many installers also obtain certifications from industry organizations to demonstrate their skills and knowledge of safety standards and building codes.

Job description

Position Title: Fireplace Install Manager
Department: Fireplaces
Reports To: Division Manager
FLSA Status: Salary
Location: Havana Location

Position Summary

Rio Grande Co. is looking for a Fireplace Install Manager who can lead our fireplace installation department and bring strong mechanical field experience to the team. We can teach the fireplace business, but we need someone who already understands field installation work, mechanical systems, venting, jobsite execution, crews, tools, trucks, safety, scheduling, and accountability.

The ideal candidate may come from an HVAC, heat pump, mechanical contracting, or field foreman background. This person should understand how mechanical systems are installed, how venting is planned and run, how crews should operate in the field, and how to manage work so it is done safely, correctly, and efficiently.

About Rio Grande Co.

Founded in 1893, Rio Grande Co. has proudly served the Denver and Rocky Mountain region for over 132 years. What began as a fuel and feed business has grown into a trusted distributor, fabricator, and building materials resource supporting construction projects across Colorado.

As a multi-generational, family-led company, members of the Peterson family – Erik, Elmer, Donald, and Bruce – have guided our growth and long-standing contribution to Colorado’s construction industry.

At Rio Grande Co., we build more than structures — we build teams, careers, and futures. What sets us apart:

  • A family-founded culture that prioritizes people and relationships
  • A workplace grounded in safety, respect, and accountability
  • Transparent leadership and clear expectations
  • Investment in employee development and training
  • A commitment to doing the right thing for our employees, customers and communities

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee fireplace installers to make sure all installations are completed safely, efficiently, and according to manufacturer specifications, code requirements, and Rio Grande Co. standards.
  • Learn Rio Grande’s fireplace products, installation standards, manufacturer guidelines, and inspection requirements.
  • Bring mechanical field knowledge to the department, including experience with HVAC systems, heat pumps, venting, ducting, equipment layout, field coordination, and jobsite problem-solving.
  • Manage approximately 15-20 installers, including daily performance, productivity, quality, safety, attendance, professionalism, and jobsite conduct.
  • Oversee installer vehicles, tools, equipment, ladders, safety gear, and materials to make sure crews are properly equipped and accountable.
  • Train new installers through in-house instruction, field training, ride-alongs, and jobsite coaching.
  • Review previous day job photos, paperwork, trip sheets, and installation notes with installers to confirm quality, accuracy, and completion.
  • Review same-day assignments with installers before they leave for the field and make sure arrival times are spaced appropriately to improve efficiency.
  • Work with the scheduling team to review the daily and weekly install schedule for accuracy, routing, efficiency, crew capacity, and customer expectations.
  • Conduct ride-alongs with experienced installers to evaluate field practices, improve install times, identify training needs, and make sure company standards are followed.
  • Perform job walks for future projects and review plans, site conditions, venting paths, equipment locations, and installation requirements.
  • Work with sales representatives, builders, customers, and internal teams to confirm job accuracy before installation.
  • Perform pre-job and post-job checks to reduce mistakes, callbacks, warranty issues, and customer complaints.
  • Assist with customer care issues related to fireplace installations, jobsite concerns, scheduling problems, product questions, and service follow-up.
  • Help improve department processes, field communication, install quality, documentation, training, and accountability.
  • Work with suppliers, manufacturers, inspectors, customers, and Rio Grande employees in a professional and practical manner.

Desired Background

The strongest candidate will likely have experience as one or more of the following:

  • Fireplace install manager or senior fireplace installer
  • Mechanical foreman
  • HVAC foreman or lead installer
  • Heat pump installation lead
  • Mechanical contractor field supervisor
  • Venting or ducting installation supervisor
  • Construction field supervisor managing multiple crews

Required Qualifications

  • Strong field leadership experience in mechanical, HVAC, heat pump, fireplace, or related construction work.
  • Practical understanding of venting, mechanical layout, equipment installation, and jobsite coordination.
  • Ability to manage installers, hold people accountable, and improve field performance.
  • Strong safety mindset and attention to installation quality.
  • Ability to read plans, review jobsite conditions, and identify potential installation issues before crews arrive.
  • Comfortable working with customers, builders, salespeople, schedulers, suppliers, and installers.
  • Willingness to learn fireplace products, manufacturer requirements, and Rio Grande’s way of doing business.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage vehicles, tools, equipment, and field assets.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to jobsites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience installing or supervising heat pump installations.
  • HVAC, mechanical, or fireplace-related certifications.
  • Experience managing 10 or more field employees.
  • Experience with residential builders, commercial jobsites, or production installation work.
  • Familiarity with gas fireplaces, venting systems, mechanical code, or manufacturer installation manuals.
  • Experience improving field productivity, reducing callbacks, and building training programs.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means installers are prepared, trained, accountable, and doing the job right the first time. Jobs are scheduled properly, vehicles and tools are managed, paperwork and photos are reviewed, callbacks are reduced, and customers are handled professionally.

This person should bring structure to the department without overcomplicating it. They need to be comfortable in the field, respected by installers, practical with customers, and strong enough to hold people accountable when the work is not being done correctly.
