Job description

Firefighter/Paramedic

This employee provides general duty firefighting work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and operating firefighting apparatus. An employee in this class is responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities; rescue operations; fire prevention inspections and administration of emergency medical care in emergency situations. An employee in this class may be required to perform duties under hazardous conditions, which involve extreme exertion, smoke and cramped surroundings. Work may involve assignment as a driver of firefighting vehicles or rescue vehicles, and the operation of a firefighting and medical equipment. Work also involves inspection and maintenance of apparatus, equipment and facilities quarters and participation in supervised training and drills. Provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured utilizing the skills, training and knowledge required of a certified Paramedic. Work is performed under the supervision of the Company Officer and the Battalion Chief and under the medical direction of the City's Medical Director.

Essential functions include responding to emergency alarms, driving fire apparatus and rescue vehicles, performing fire prevention inspections, providing emergency medical care, and generating various records and reports.

Minimum qualifications include graduation from a standard high school or its equivalent, a valid State of Florida Firefighter Certificate, a valid State of Florida Paramedic Certification, a valid State of Florida Class "E" Driver's License, and all necessary certifications to perform as a Paramedic within the City of Oakland Park.

Preferred qualifications include being a Broward County resident and holding an Associates Degree or higher.

Note: All candidates must meet physical requirements of National Fire Protection Standard 1582 and must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application.

Benefits include 100% contribution to the employee cost and 50% of the dependent cost for the City's medical plan, 100% contribution to the employee cost of the Dental HMO Plan, Florida Retirement System, $50,000 of basic life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and various supplemental insurance plans.
