Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Fire Plans Examiner to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for reviewing residential, commercial, and multi-family construction plans for compliance with the adopted California Fire Code, California Building Code, applicable NFPA standards, and relevant local ordinances.

This position requires a strong understanding of fire and life safety requirements, construction documents, fire protection systems, and code interpretation. The Fire Plans Examiner will work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, applicants, and jurisdictional staff to identify code-related issues and provide clear, technically supported corrections.

Possession of an International Code Council (I.C.C.) Fire Plans Examiner certification, California State Fire Marshal certification, or other applicable fire prevention certifications is highly desirable. Previous experience performing fire and life safety plan review for a municipality, fire agency, or consulting firm is required.

Duties

  • Perform detailed fire and life safety plan reviews for residential, commercial, multi-family, tenant improvement, and other construction projects.
  • Review architectural plans, site plans, fire access, means of egress, occupancy requirements, fire-resistance features, and other applicable life safety components.
  • Review fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and related fire protection systems within the examiner's level of experience and certification.
  • Review construction plans and supporting documents for compliance with applicable California Codes, NFPA standards, local amendments, and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and code-supported plan review comments and correction notices.
  • Perform subsequent plan reviews to verify that previous corrections have been adequately addressed.
  • Research complex or unusual code conditions and provide technically sound interpretations.
  • Communicate with architects, engineers, contractors, applicants, Fire Marshals, Building Officials, and other jurisdictional staff regarding plan review comments and code requirements.
  • Coordinate with other plan review disciplines when projects involve overlapping building, fire, accessibility, or life safety requirements.
  • Utilize Bluebeam Revu and other electronic plan review and permitting systems as required.
  • Maintain established plan review turnaround times while providing accurate and consistent reviews.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of the California Fire Code, California Building Code, and applicable fire and life safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with applicable NFPA standards, including requirements related to automatic sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting architectural, engineering, and fire protection plans.
  • Strong understanding of fire access, means of egress, occupancy classifications, fire-resistance requirements, and life safety systems.
  • Ability to research and interpret complex code requirements and clearly explain findings.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to prepare concise and understandable correction comments.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills when working with applicants, design professionals, contractors, and municipal staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple plan reviews while maintaining accuracy and required turnaround times.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and electronic plan review systems is highly desirable.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Join our team as a Fire Plans Examiner, where your experience and technical knowledge will help support our municipal partners and ensure safe, code-compliant development throughout the communities we serve.
