What does a fire alarm system inspector do?

A Fire Alarm System Inspector is responsible for examining, testing, and maintaining fire alarm systems to ensure they comply with safety codes and regulations. Inspectors often document their findings, provide reports, and recommend repairs or upgrades as needed to keep buildings safe and compliant with local fire codes.

A Fire Alarm System Inspector should have strong knowledge of fire safety codes, electrical systems, and inspection procedures, typically supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Position Title: Fire Alarm Service Technician
Location: Based in Tracy, CA – Servicing the Greater Bay Area
Pay Range: $30–$55/hour DOE
Position Type: Full-Time | Hourly | Field-Based
Position Summary

Simplified Integrations is looking for an experienced Fire Alarm Service Technician to join our growing Service team.
This is a hands-on field role focused on fire alarm service, troubleshooting, inspections, repairs, testing, and maintenance for commercial and multifamily properties throughout the Greater Bay Area.
We’re looking for someone who already has real fire alarm experience, takes pride in solving problems correctly, communicates professionally, and wants to continue growing technically.
This is not an entry-level or helper position. You do not need to be a Senior Technician, but you should already have hands-on fire alarm experience and a solid technical foundation.
Technicians are placed within SI’s Service Technician I–III growth structure based on demonstrated skill, experience, independence, and technical ability, with opportunities to advance into Senior Technician, Inspection Specialist, Crew Lead, and other technical or leadership roles.
Key Responsibilities

  •  Service, troubleshoot, test, inspect, maintain, and repair commercial fire alarm systems
  •  Diagnose system troubles, supervisory conditions, wiring issues, device failures, communication issues, and other deficiencies
  •  Replace and repair devices, modules, batteries, power supplies, notification appliances, initiating devices, and related components
  •  Use multimeters, testing equipment, wiring diagrams, manufacturer documentation, and system information to troubleshoot effectively
  •  Perform routine fire alarm inspections and testing according to assigned scope and applicable requirements
  •  Perform basic programming, configuration, or commissioning within demonstrated skill level and company authorization
  •  Support monitoring takeovers, system upgrades, repairs, and retrofit work as needed
  •  Read and interpret risers, schematics, wiring diagrams, plans, and manufacturer documentation
  •  Identify, clearly document, and communicate system deficiencies and recommended follow-up work
  •  Complete accurate digital work orders, including troubleshooting performed, work completed, photos, materials used, deficiencies, and job status
  •  Ensure documentation clearly communicates what occurred onsite and what happens next for the customer, office, estimator, and next technician
  •  Communicate professionally with customers, dispatch, Service leadership, and other field personnel
  •  Know when to resolve an issue independently and when to escalate for additional technical support
  •  Take ownership of quality workmanship and minimize preventable callbacks and rework
  •  Maintain an organized company vehicle, tools, testing equipment, and jobsite
  •  Follow SI safety procedures, manufacturer requirements, applicable NFPA standards, and AHJ requirements
  •  Perform only work you are properly trained, qualified, certified, and authorized to perform
  •  Participate in the emergency on-call rotation as assigned
Requirements

  • Prior hands-on fire alarm experience required
  • 2+ years of fire alarm experience preferred, but demonstrated technical ability matters more than years alone
  •  Experience with fire alarm service, troubleshooting, inspections, repairs, installation, or maintenance
  •  Working knowledge of low-voltage and basic electrical principles
  •  Ability to troubleshoot fire alarm systems using a multimeter and other diagnostic equipment
  •  Ability to read wiring diagrams and understand common fire alarm system components
  •  Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  •  Strong written and verbal communication
  •  Ability to communicate professionally with customers and internal teams
  •  Strong documentation and follow-through
  •  Ability to work independently within your demonstrated technical competency
  •  Ability to recognize when an issue should be escalated
  •  Comfortable using mobile applications for work orders, photos, timekeeping, documentation, and communication
  •  Valid driver’s license and acceptable DMV record
  •  Reliable, accountable, safety-minded, and committed to continued learning
Preferred Qualifications

  •  California Fire/Life Safety Technician certification / Blue Card
  •  NICET certification
  •  Experience with multiple fire alarm manufacturers
  •  Fire alarm programming experience
  •  Commercial or multifamily fire alarm experience
  •  Experience performing fire alarm inspections and testing
  •  Experience with monitoring takeovers, commissioning, or system upgrades
  •  Manufacturer-specific training or certifications
What Success Looks Like

A successful Fire Alarm Service Technician at SI:
  •  Troubleshoots problems instead of guessing
  •  Completes safe, clean, quality work
  •  Minimizes preventable callbacks and rework
  •  Documents work accurately and completely
  •  Communicates clearly with customers and the SI team
  •  Raises technical, customer, safety, and compliance concerns early
  •  Takes ownership of assigned work from arrival through closeout
  •  Maintains tools, equipment, and company vehicle properly
  •  Continues developing technical knowledge and independence
  •  Can be trusted to represent SI professionally in the field
Physical Requirements

  •  Ability to lift and carry tools, ladders, equipment, and materials required for field service work
  •  Work from ladders, overhead, above ceilings, and in typical commercial building environments
  •  Work indoors and outdoors in varying jobsite conditions
  •  Regularly stand, walk, bend, reach, climb, and perform hands-on technical work
  •  Travel between customer locations throughout the Greater Bay Area
Compensation & Benefits

  • $30–$55/hour based on experience, certifications, demonstrated technical ability, and internal technician level
  •  Medical, dental, and vision benefits
  •  401(k)
  •  PTO and Paid Company Holidays
  •  Company-provided vehicle and gas card for independently dispatched technicians
  •  Ongoing technical training and certification support
  •  Defined technician growth and advancement opportunities
  •  Regular performance and professional development reviews
Growth Opportunity

Simplified Integrations maintains a defined technician development path based on technical capability, independence, reliability, communication, documentation, and performance.
Service Technician I → Service Technician II → Service Technician III → Senior Service Technician

Additional advancement opportunities may include Inspection Specialist, Crew Lead, technical training, and field leadership roles.
Growth is based on demonstrated ability and performance — not simply time in the position.
Who We’re Looking For

You like figuring things out.
You take pride in finding the actual problem, fixing it correctly, documenting what you did, and leaving the customer confident in the work that was completed.
You communicate when you need support, take ownership of your work, and care about doing things safely and correctly.
You don’t need to know everything yet — but you should already know the trade, have hands-on fire alarm experience, and want to keep getting better.

Who This Role Is Not For

This role is not for someone looking to enter the trade with no prior experience.
It is also not for someone who cuts corners, guesses instead of troubleshooting, leaves incomplete documentation, avoids customer communication, or needs repeated reminders to finish assigned work.
Fire life safety work requires accuracy, accountability, and professionalism.
