Role Description

The Fire Alarm Designer will develop fire alarm system designs and layout drawings that comply with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements. Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing detailed design documents, calculations, and specifications; coordinating with project managers, engineers, and other design disciplines; and reviewing plans for accuracy and constructability. The role involves working with CAD/BIM tools, interpreting architectural and engineering drawings, and supporting permitting and approvals by responding to authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) comments. This is a full-time, on-site role based in Phoenix, AZ, requiring regular collaboration with local project teams and occasional visits to client sites.


Qualifications
  • Strong proficiency in fire alarm system design, including device layout, wiring concepts, and code-compliant configurations.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA codes (e.g., NFPA 70, NFPA 72) and local building and fire codes relevant to fire alarm systems.
  • Experience using CAD and/or BIM software (such as AutoCAD or Revit) for producing coordinated fire alarm drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical, and structural plans to integrate fire alarm designs effectively.
  • Solid technical writing skills for design narratives, calculations, and documentation supporting permitting and construction.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate with engineers, project managers, clients, and AHJs.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, fire protection, electrical engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Relevant certifications such as NICET Fire Alarm Systems certification (Level II or higher) or equivalent experience are highly beneficial.
  • Prior experience in fire protection engineering, fire alarm contracting, or consulting is a plus, especially in commercial or industrial projects.
