Job description

AWS Fintech's data platform powers financial reporting for all of AWS - every dollar, every data point. As a Sr. Software Development Engineer (Sr.

SDE) on the Data Platform team (DataFI), you will shape how Amazon understands its cloud business by driving the technical vision, architecture, and implementation of platform capabilities that thousands of engineers and finance professionals depend on daily.
You will lead system design, implement critical-path code, define and raise engineering standards, and drive operational readiness for a suite of products used across AWS Fintech, AWS, and Amazon. This role demands end-to-end expertise across the data stack, versatility in complex and evolving technologies, and excellent judgment to balance large-scale architectural decisions with enabling fast experimentation and time-to-market.
We are looking for a seasoned builder who thrives at the intersection of scale, complexity, and craft - someone who decomposes ambiguous problems into actionable technical roadmaps and then builds them.
Key job responsibilities
- Drive technical vision and architecture for a cohesive data platform, unifying multiple offerings into a seamless builder experience.
- Design and implement critical-path systems - own the architecture from whiteboard to production, making decisions that balance scalability with speed-to-market.
- Define and raise engineering standards across the team - code quality, operational readiness, testing patterns, and documentation.
- Solve hard technical problems: sub-second OLAP queries over petabyte-scale financial datasets, building trust through lineage spanning hundreds of pipelines, and designing AI-driven root-cause analysis for data quality at enterprise scale.
- Influence data strategy and investment decisions, partnering with Principal Engineers and senior leaders to shape where we invest next.
- Mentor engineers and raise the hiring bar - grow the people around you and cultivate a culture of engineering excellence.
- Research, prototype, and publish - produce design documents, POCs, and recommendations that broadly influence technical and business leaders across AWS Fintech.
- Identify hotspots and eliminate duplicate work across teams - think in platforms, build with empathy for the engineers who consume your systems.
A day in the life
- Design and code review sessions - writing and reviewing critical-path code, providing architectural guidance to the team.
- Deep-dive into system performance, operational metrics, and customer pain points to identify improvement opportunities.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Principal Engineers, and partner teams to refine requirements and align on technical direction.
- Prototype and evaluate new technologies, frameworks, or architectural patterns to solve emerging challenges.
- Participate in operational reviews, on-call rotations, and incident response - ensuring systems meet the reliability bar AWS Finance requires.
- Mentor team members through pairing, design discussions, and code reviews.
- Author and iterate on design documents, technical specs, and architectural decision records.
- Sprint planning and backlog refinement - prioritizing technical debt, feature work, and operational improvements.
About the team
The AWS Fintech Data Platform team (DataFI) provides managed platform capabilities and library solutions that operate at scale. We are the owners of AWS financial data and technology solutions, building systems that enable management and financial reporting for all of AWS.
Our portfolio includes:
- Data Lineage - The single lineage solution across AWS data teams, with a vision of connecting end-to-end data flow across AWS and extending to Finance datasets across FGBS.
- Managed OLAP & Custom Pivot UI - Large-scale, low-latency data read layer that all of AWS Finance relies on for reporting and analytics.
- Data Quality Platform - A unified platform for capturing data quality issues, detecting anomalies, with a roadmap toward AI-driven 5-Whys root-cause analysis.
- Data Platform Tools - ETL Framework, Managed MWAA, File Validation Service - the foundational plumbing that keeps pipelines running.
We are a team of builders who value depth over breadth, who ship weekly, and who treat operational excellence as a craft - not a checkbox

We believe the best platforms are built by engineers who use them, and we dogfood relentlessly.
