What is a FinOps engineer?

FinOps Engineers are professionals who specialize in cloud financial management, helping organizations optimize their cloud spending and improve budgeting, forecasting, and cost allocation. They work closely with engineering, finance, and operations teams to implement best practices for cloud usage and cost control. Their goal is to ensure that cloud investments deliver maximum business value by balancing performance, cost, and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FinOps engineer?

To thrive as a FinOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, financial analysis, and cost optimization, often supported by a background in computer science, finance, or cloud certifications. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), cost management tools, and data analytics systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for managing cloud spending efficiently and enabling organizations to maximize value from their cloud investments.

How does a FinOps engineer typically collaborate with engineering and finance teams to optimize cloud spending?

A FinOps Engineer acts as a bridge between engineering and finance teams by translating technical cloud usage data into actionable financial insights. They often participate in regular meetings with both groups to review cloud costs, identify optimization opportunities, and set budgetary controls. This role requires clear communication to ensure that engineering teams can maintain performance while finance teams achieve cost visibility and predictability. FinOps Engineers also help establish and enforce best practices for tagging, resource allocation, and forecasting to support collaborative decision-making.

What is the difference between Finops Engineer vs Cloud Engineer?

Location: Newtown Square, PA (Hybrid - 3 days onsite).
Duration: Contract to Hire after 3-6 months

Overview

  • Seeking a hands-on Hybrid Cloud & Virtualization Manager to lead enterprise compute across Azure, AWS, and on-prem VMware environments
  • Role focused on secure, compliant, and cost-optimized infrastructure supporting payer-grade workloads (highly regulated, business-critical systems)
  • Owns hybrid cloud operations, VMware virtualization, and enterprise FinOps / consumption governance
  • Ideal for environments balancing legacy on-prem investments with modern data/cloud platforms (including Databricks)
  • Structured as a contract-to-hire with long-term leadership potential

What You’ll Do

  • Lead operations across hybrid infrastructure (Azure, AWS + VMware-based on-prem environments)
  • Manage and optimize VMware environments (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, clusters, storage, networking)
  • Ensure availability, performance, and resilience of enterprise compute platforms
  • Oversee infrastructure spanning on-prem, private cloud, and public cloud environments
  • Establish and enforce compute governance, standards, and controls across cloud and on-prem
  • Drive security, compliance, and audit readiness aligned to regulated payer environments (PHI, HIPAA-type controls)
  • Oversee identity, access, and secure compute posture across hybrid environments
  • Own end-to-end FinOps and consumption management across:
    • Azure and AWS cloud usage
    • Databricks / data & analytics workloads
    • VMware on-prem compute (cost per VM, cluster, application, or business unit)
  • Leverage tools such as Finout (and native cloud tooling) to:
    • Drive cost visibility and allocation (showback / chargeback)
    • Identify optimization opportunities (right-sizing, workload placement)
    • Partner with finance on budget tracking and forecasting
  • Support hybrid cloud strategy, balancing workloads across environments for cost, compliance, and performance
  • Lead initiatives for automation, monitoring, and infrastructure standardization
  • Partner with application, data, and security teams on platform reliability and modernization initiatives
  • Manage and mentor infrastructure and virtualization engineering teams

What You Bring

  • 8–12+ years of experience in infrastructure, cloud, and virtualization leadership roles
  • Deep expertise in VMware (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter)
  • Strong experience across hybrid cloud environments (Azure and/or AWS)
  • Proven experience managing enterprise compute across on-prem and cloud platforms
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Cloud cost management / FinOps practices

  • Strong understanding of:
    • Virtualization, compute, storage, and networking
    • Infrastructure security and access controls
    • Backup, disaster recovery, and high availability
  • Experience in regulated industries (healthcare / payer preferred)
  • Proven ability to lead teams and work cross-functionally with engineering, security, and finance

Nice to Have

  • VMware certifications (VCP, VCAP)
  • Cloud certifications (AWS, Azure)
  • Experience in payer organizations or large healthcare enterprises
  • Exposure to automation (Terraform, scripting, DevOps tooling)
  • Familiarity with enterprise cost governance platforms (Finout, Apptio, CloudHealth, etc.)
